I'm wanting to plant some jalapenos in pots. How large of a pot will be big enough for a jalapeno plant? Thanks.
Jalapeno in pots
About the smallest pot to use would be a 3 gallon nursery pot, or a 10 inch flower pot. Best if you use plastic to reduce the evaporation from the sun, otherwise you'll have to water more often.
Hiya Dave. and if ya go much large ya get tons of roots and not as productive a plant.
What size pot is in that picture??
That's a 3 gallon pot!
I grew some jalapenos in pots, some in my garden, last summer.
The jalapenos in the pots produced flower and fruit sooner, but fewer jalapenos overall. By the end of the summer the plants were root bound and chlorotic, possibly the reason the plants produced fewer peppers. However, many of the potted plants produced bright-red jalapenos.
The jalapenos in the garden were slower to flower, but flowered continuously throughout the summer and thus produced more fruit overall. Some, but not all, of the plants, produced red jalapenos.
This is for landscapetech55. What is chlorotic? I have a pair of jalapeno's in pots that i've had for several years.
Well, I'm in Ontario - Jalapenos are annuals and die before the winter here. Chlorotic leaves are basically yellowing and lacking nutrients. This happens to potted plants quite often, as their roots begin to bunch up inside the container. The best way to prevent this is to re-pot into bigger containers regularly.
It'd be interesting to grow jalapeno plants year-round - what do they look like when they're that old? ie woody? how big do they get?
