How to root ardisia elliptica houseplant

I have one at the office. I cut a branch that was about 12 inches long off the plant (left 5 inches) and am trying to root it in water. However, all the leaves on the cutting are now all very very droopy 5 days after I cut it.

Should I have let the end harden, then dipped it in rooting hormone and stuck it in soil? Please help, I really want to save this one!
