A friend of mine has a huge live oak tree in his front yard, which is shady all the time. He wants to put grass under it. Will probably need about 6-8 hundred sq.ft. of it. I know that most St. Augustine and Bahai like full-to-partial sun. Some strains of St. Aug. will grow in the shade but are very expensive. This guy is not a "real" gardener, so low maintenance is also required. We live in central Fla. Any ideas??
grass in shady area
you could try to have a tree service "poke" some holes in the canopy of the Live Oak. Pick up the outer edges of the canopy, so the branch tips dont hang so low. do some interior cleaning as well. if you have a tree service trim it, dont let them wear spikes in the tree. only hire a service that will free climb it. plant palmetto variety of st. augustine or zoysia. tolerates some shade. good luck
thanks, good idea about trimming. I notice that on the west side of the tree the branches aren't as low and the sun comes in at an angle in late afternoon and the grass grows over on that side. We have an in-law that owns a tree bussiness and uses a bucket truck--no climbing
Google Univ. of Florida Cooperative Extension there will be a site for lawn and garden
