moving an apple tree

Foristell, MO(Zone 5b)

i must move 3 three year old apple trees. They are healthy and still dormant, buds are just beginning to swell now. What would be the best way to do this? Thank-you all for your help. Tievoli

Here is some info on transplanting trees.

Thank-you, that helps. Do apple trees have a tap root or main root, like rose bushes, that I need to make sure to NOT cut or could i trim the roots within a few feet of the trunk or below the tree? Know what I mean?

Some varieties do, some don't. The best idea it seems is to try to dig at least 2 feet out from the trunk to a depth of 18 to 24 inches, thus making a bowl shaped root ball. This seems to gather as many feeder roots and support roots as possible. When you do remove the tree, it works really well to place it on a tarp to transport it to its new home. Always try to handle the tree by the root ball rather than the trunk.
here are a couple links with some more info for you, including staking a newly moved tree.
