I spent the day online trying to find some heirloom seeds to start a small Concord grape arbor but didn't come across anything. Any suggestions? I'm trying to avoid hybrids, GMO seeds, and unusual variants ... but that seems to be all I found. Really, I'm just looking to find some grapes like my grandma had, sweet and juicy. They don't have to be Concord, that was just the type she had and what I had hoped to find again. Any sturdy grape with good sweet fruit would do (table grapes, though ... not for wine or anything). A friend recommended this site and said someone might be able to help in my search. So thanks for reading and I look forward to any responses. :-)
Finding heirloom grapes
I don't know if Concord grapes would come true from seed--you might have to buy plants instead. Buying plants will guarantee that they're the exact variety you're looking for and will taste the same--seed grown ones it's a little more questionable.
Welcome to Dave's garden.
As far as I know grapes are grown from cuttings or are grafted except for wild grapes so part of the frustration you are having is looking for seeds instead of plants. I just did a quick google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=heirloom+concord+grape++-tx+-tomato+-juice&btnG=Search&num=50&hl=en&safe=off&sa=2)
I came up with a few companies that hade concord grapes. From there I looked them up in the the watch dog (http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/) The first 3 I looked at I rejected because of excessive negative reviews.
Rolling River Nursery lists concord grape vines. I have no personal knowledge of this company just came across it doing a search.
If the vines still exist where you grandmother lives/lived you could take cuttings from the vine. If you know of a farmer that is growing concords you could ask him for some cuttings. Good luck -Doug
Thanks to you both for replying. My gandma's grapes are long gone but I will look for cuttings. I don't know anyone with grapes of their own or I would definitely have gotten them locally. Thanks for the search tips, too, I'm sure they will lead me in a better direction than I was going. :-)
