Problem with eggplant seeds sprouting

Crestview, FL

I planted Lavender Touch Eggplant seeds, FL Highbush Eggplant seeds and Black Beauty Eggplant seeds on 3/9/2010 and only have one sprout thus far; it's a highbush, what's going on here, and how long does it take for the seeds to sprout, I have them in a seed starter kit, under a dome and a heating mat under all that, so what is wrong here?

Eggplants can take like a week or more to sprout even with a heating mat. I have atleast six varieties going and my slowest has been one called Ma Zu. Its an heirloom from China and I thought all the seeds had rotted it took so long. The plants are these little miserable scrawny things, but strong and healthy. I'm going to do a second plantinging of them just for luck. Rosa Bianca I also found to be slow but finally clicked along.

Since I'm an eggplant fiend I'm doing another planting this week to make sure I get them all summer. As soon as this cursed rain stops I'm moving the seedlings out to my cold frame to hold them until the weather warms up enough to plant them in the ground. Since I'm putting in another raised bed anyway, I'm thinking of doing a hot bed and putting them out under a hoop house. That way I can really get a jump on the season. J

Just be patient. Oh and I found I get better results too when I plant them very shallow.

They can take forever. It hasn't even been a week. It sounds like you are doing everything right so now all you need to do is wait

I'm glad you two posted, I was beginning to wonder if I had done something wrong, I moved everything out of the seed starter kit except the eggplants so they can take their time now, and they are still under the dome and have the heating mat under them. I feel like I'm running behind on time schedule though. But we had a late winter, it hasn't been raining much this week which I'm thankful for because some of my tomatoes are doing fine outside all day and night now and I want them to stay out there like that a little while before transplanting them where they will go. I can always yank them back in should we get another freeze.
