Hello, I have been trying to find this tree in the Dave's Garden website but have been unsuccessful on doing so. Could it not be in the site?
"Texas Blue Giant" Fig Tree
Hi John. It would appear that no one has entered the Texas Blue Giant fig into the plant files yet. I did find a nursery that sells them, but are currently out of stock
http://www.naturehills.com/product/texas_blue_giant_fig.aspx
and this one that appears to have the plant in stock
http://www.raintreenursery.com/catalog/productdetails.cfm?ProductID=D365
If you are looking for info on it, google search Ficus carica 'texas blue giant' that should give you the info you need,
thanks
I bought it from
http://www.fanicknursery.com
I would like to add it to this website but I dont want to enter the wrong info...you know what I mean?
in about 3-5 years I will be eating baseball size figs
I hear ya John. The plantfiles admin will always try to double check your info, and other users will let them know if there is any mis-information, so you do have a fail-safe. I understand they get quite large. I am a big fan of the Brown Turkey fig....fresh off the tree or chilled on a hot summer day....grin
Hey JohnTS71....
Have you tried / eaten one of these 'baseball' sized figs before? I love figs -- I'm planting a "Black Mission" tree as one of the 8 other fruit trees I'm going to try out here in N. Texas.
I looked around at the Fanick Nursery website link you provided... I see that they also sell "pomegranate" trees too. I'll have to see if they can handle a N.Texas winter.
Jannz2 -- I planted a pomnegranate tree this past fall -- "Wonderful". I am in zone 7, along the OK border. And as you know, we had the winter that set records. My tree made it! Lots of nice green leaves on it.
My fig tree (planted at the same time) hasn't shown any new growth. I think it was a Brown Turkey. I keep hoping it will come up from the root, but thus far, nothing. Hoping I can find a replacement. I actually had two figs off of it in its first year -- while still in a pot.
Hey Gretagreenthumb, hang in there. My Turkey fig is in the ground in zone 8b/9a and has been for 9 years....it just started leafing out last week. The Alma fig which is much smaller/younger just started to show a bit of color at the tips this week.
Hey Greta....where'd you get your "Pomegranate" from ..??.. You probably get a little more cold weather than we do...even though we're not THAT far apart. We're only about an 1.5hr or so from OK border. I really like pomegranate so I'll have to check into where I can get one.
.....
I planted some 'bare root' fruit trees that I ordered from Willis Orchard about 10days ago --
-- Chocolate Persimmon Tree
-- Fuyu Persimmon Tree
-- Black Mission Fig Tree
-- Texas Everbearing Fig Tree
-- Royal Apricot Tree
-- Sugar Pear Tree
I keep checking and there's no new leaf forming..??... I sure hope they DO SOMETHING. Willis Orchard was recommended to me...and now I'm wondering if I should have just bought locally... although probably 10days isn't long enough ??
I also planted some "Nectaplums" that I ordered from a different nursery and they're REALLY showing some good leaf turnout. I'm really curious to taste these fruit...nectarines and plums are two of my more favorite fruit.
Moonowl -- you're right. I was checking once again on my fig tree. I was actually ready to pull it up and, low and behold, I saw two tiny green sprouts. They were ground level on the lowest branch. It is alive! Yea!
Jannz2 -- I managed to get the Pomegranate at a local nursery at a end of the summer sale. I've never heard of a nectaplum, interesting. I may have to investigate that one. My nectarine has many 1" long baby fruits. I was so surprised to find them. Good luck with your fruit trees this spring/summer. Be sure to keep them watered. I think I'll wait till fall to plant any more trees.
Too cool, Greta. They are so hardy it is hard for me to picture them not surviving. True story. A neighbor of my DH's grandfather cut down a HUGE fig tree and decided to use the limbs and larger branches as fence posts to separate the goats and cattle. The following spring, over half of his fence posts had sprouted.....that was over 40 years ago. You can tell his pasture, it is the one with a line of over 20 beautiful, productive LA Brown Turkey fig trees....grin
OK -- I gotta get one of these 'Turkey Fig' trees if they are THAT easy to grow.
My DH will shape up the tree in mid winter when the tree goes dormant and take 10 to 14 inch cuttings at least the size of a pencil, remove the bud-tip and stick them into pots of regular potting soil. He gets about 85 to 90% success using that method alone. We put the pots in a sunny spot and keep them from drying out.
I wonder if your planting zone makes a difference....????... I still want to try "cuttings" from trees to get new ones.
I really do not think it makes any difference other than coldest winter temps and some shelter from wind/cold would take care of that.
