I planted the seeds of my ground cherries and tomitillos too early. Last year they took a long time to germinate, but this year they popped up in a few days. The seed packet says to grow like tomatoes, so can I bury the stems like tomatoes? Do they root along the stems?
how deep can I plant ground cherries?
I'm hoping you get an answer on this; I'm planting ground cherries for the first time this year, and I'd like to know this as well. But let me ask you (since I've never planted these before)--how many plants do you think I should have for a family of 4?
How many plants depends on how much your family likes them. Have you ever tried them? Most people that tried them in my garden liked them, but didn't care for many. The first year I planted the variety Pineapple from Territoral Seed Co we loved them. Last year I tried Aunt Molly's , aslo from TSC. It became a garden monster! We had several weeks of rain and the garden was neglected- It grew over the peppers next to it. and up the tomatoe trellis. I think we liked the flavor of the pineapple better. but it is hard to say for sure since it wasn't a new thing to us. The Pineapple variety may have been a smaller plant due to our severe drought conditions.
This year I am trying Goldie from Johnny's selected seeds.
I will have to experiment to see if ground cherries root along the stem. I will plant some deep and some at soil level.
What variety are you planing to grow?
I got seeds from Baker Creek Seed--they are labeled only as "Ground Cherry (Strawberry Husk Tomato), and they're described as being "the common type used by the Pilgrims."
