Daily Pics Vol 296

The mockingbirds have only come to the yard in the early spring so far. But the jays are regulars! The jays do prefer open platform or tray feeders or ground feeders. What type are you trying to draw them too? Mine are quite shy too. Any movement and they take off.

I've tried to use whole peanuts to attract Blue Jays. I'd love to see Mockingbirds and Robins (also) to come to the feeders. Wow, Linth. That's one attractive duck!

mcash70 - Quote, "Hack, you miss half a day here and it can take 2 days to catch up." Ain't that the truth! And that's a pretty Am Robin, I've been seeing lots of them.

dellrose - both of your Cardinals have nice red color.

huggergirl - nice capture of the Eagle in Legro, Indiana.

Lily_love - lucky you, again - a Redheaded Woodpecker - wow - I've never photoed one..

ducbucln - Quote, "Hack, love that closeup of the Brown Thrasher! Great shots, love the E. Towhees." Thanks, me too. Those Brewers Blackbirds are nice. I've never seen one.

nanny_56 - I've never seen an Eastern Phoebe, either. Cool shot. And I like the pic of the mockingbird eating peanuts. I got me some whole peanuts and am gonna put some out tomorrow, see what it draws.

gardenpom - I've seen plenty of Great Blue Herons, but never a nest of them. Nice

linthicum - Your male 'Red-breasted Merganser' photo really looks good.

Maybe we'll have some sunny weather tomorrow. It rained hard this morning.

Great shots guys!

Nanny, Nice shots of the birds at the ground feeder! my Mockingbirds only come in the morning for a drink at the bird bath.

Lily, I've enclosed your photo of the Red-headed Woodpecker lightened up a bit.

Linth, Beautiful Merganser!

Nanny, I use whole peanuts in the shell on a platform feeder to get the Jays to come in. They sometimes will eat the hot pepper suet in the tree too but thats not often.

Very cool pics everybody! Love that merganser, wow. I'm going back to "the river" next month where I saw redheaded woodpeckers last year. Hope to see them again.

Took a whole lot of lousy pics yesterday, but got to mark three new birds in my book! Here was one of my new ones, a pair of Northern Shovelers.

This is the only other pic worth sharing. I'm not sure if they are all Green-winged Teals, but that's what I'm going with.

I have no trouble getting the jays to come in with the peanut pieces. I have up to 7 jays at a time now.

Lily, I had a pair robins coming regular to the oriole table to eat grapes and the grape jelly last year. The male would catch bugs and the dip them in the jelly....sooooo funny to watch! I think the male is back now and keeps looking for the table. I don't have it set up yet as it is a bit early for the orioles. I feel a little guilty! So you might try that.

I had lot of birds eating the grapes and jelly. Orioles, Cardinals, Jays, Red-bellied WP (they like oranges too!), Robins, Thrashers. Which is why I want to put up another pole system where I can leave the food out and have it available to them at all times.

My jays even share if the company behaves!

Congratulations Elphaba! You know I'm still curious as to how many birds you have on your total list. Seeing's that you live in Bird Paradise I would imagine you have a lot. Sorry for being nosy but I can't help it. :-)

Nanny, Jays dipping bugs in jelly lol?? Those are some gourmet Jays. :-)

Thank you, Pelle and Hack for lightened up the photo. Nan, I'll surely try to attract the Blue Jays and Robins again, will keep you posted. Here is a Pacific Plover pic. that turns out pretty decent. :-)

I LOVE that plover!

LOL Pelle! After I posted, I was wondering too, so I went outside with my book, sat in the sun and started counting! It's not as many as you might think but then I've only been really birding for about 2 years. I'm at 145.

Hay...great shots everyone!!

Nanny....I haven't seen any phoebes yet....lucky you!
Duc....that shot of the spotted towhee is just beautiful!
Linthicum.......gorgeous merganser shot!

It is raining, raining, raining today but the yard is very busy. I have had a pair of yellow rumped warblers hanging around which is unusual for this time of year. I usually just see one for a few weeks in the Spring and then it disappears:

Pelle...it was the Robin that would dip the bugs! We couldn't believe even tho we saw it do it ...many times I had a photo somewhere but can't find it right now.

Great Plover!!

Well that's not bad at all. I'm sure you'll pick up more real fast as you get more involved in it. Are there any places near you that hold guided bird walks with an expert? Thats a great way to see more birds and learn things about the area etc.

Nice pics sacar! All rain here too.

Oops nanny.
