Need help with non blooming Daffodil bulbs

Stillwater/Laughlin,, OK(Zone 7a)

I have a lot of Daffodil leaves coming up but no or very few buds to bloom. What do I need to do now...............Separate them, fertilize them or what..........and when do I do this????

Leaves are just coming up? Be patient and wait for the flower stalks. They should come next. I planted a mix of daffodils 2 years ago. Some were early bloomers and some late. All the leaves came up about the same time but the flower stalks for the late bloomers appeared 3-4 weeks *after* the earliest of the early blooms.

When the number of blooms start to diminish in established clumps, it's time to divide - or - just plan on dividing them every other year to avoid enduring a year of less blooms. After leaves yellow and die back: Cut off dead leaves. Dig up bulbs. Bag bulbs in something that is not airtight. Store in dark place. I used brown paper lunch bags and stored them on a shelf in the tool shed. I split the bulbs before planting but some people do it when they're digging up. Then plant bulbs at end of growing season.

You may have to adjust those bulb directions - I'm in the midwest and still snow covered. The same principles apply but the procedure may be very different for your area.

If your daffodils are planted in Jakarta, Indonesia I see no conceivable way they are getting the approximately 12 week cold period required for bloom unless you purchased the bulbs pre-cooled or gave them the required cold treatment yourself. I have heard of daffs blooming without the required cool period but they are usually much later. I have my doubts about you getting any flowers

Sorry, I didn't realize that my address was still in Jakarta, Indonesia. I am now living in Ok, zone 7. But information that Sharon wrote makes since. I talked to a Lowe's Specialist today and she told me that I might try fertilizing them with Blooming fertilizer. I have been gone 7 years so I am sure they need to be separated. I also read Daves Garden that I can wait till leaves turn yellow and then move them this spring.........have you heard of that?

Yes, I've heard of moving/replanting right away instead of storing. If I opted for that method here, I can count on those bulbs getting the chill time time they need before next spring. I don't know if you can count on that happening in OK. Eventually someone else in a zone closer to yours will fill you in for that part of the question.

And 7 years would explain less blooms! Oh and welcome back too!

I believe that if they are planted too deep, you will get leaves, but very few blooms. I think they may need to be dug up and reset.

Encroaching shade from developing trees can be an issue sometimes too, although most Daffs get plenty of sun before deciduous trees leaf out. Sounds like after 7 years, crowding is the most likely problem, but it couldn't hurt to use some bulb fertilizer too. I believe most brands recommend fertilizing in fall and early spring.
