WESTERN HUMMINGBIRDS VOL. 8

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

We came from here-
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1051171/

This young Anna's Hummingbird had me laughing this morning while watching it try to drink the nectar in the feeder. It's apparently been working on or building a nest and had a few feathers stuck in its mouth. The bird got frustrated because it couldn't get the feathers to fall so it flew over to the wire on our deck railing and tried rubbing the beak on the wire. It still didn't succeed and after a few clicks of the camera, it finally gave up and flew off.

A few moments later the bird did return to the feeder, feather free, and was able to finally get a good drink. These birds sure can brighten any gloomy, rainy day for me!

no. 2 Gosh, that's a long tongue sticking out! By the way, I had to take all these through the window because the wind was so bad.

Wonderful shots Duc! Glad she was able to get that off her.

Thanks for starting the new thread!

Thanks for the new thread and the great pics of a bird dilemma.

I have a feeder out and am anxiously awaiting my first rufous. Any day now!

Klamath River, CA

This is the first Rufous I've seen this year. The Anna's that was here earlier must have been passing through. Haven't seen it in a long time.

Glad to see the rufous are coming. Any day now..............

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Not fair, my first Rufous was due here the last week of February and I still haven't seen one. At least I did get one more new male Anna's yesterday. He has a beautiful red head!!

Because of the bad winds lately, I haven't had many opportunities to photograph the hummers in flight.

I just love it when I can see all the beautiful colors on their backs.

This is the first day any of the hummers have stayed together on the feeder for a couple months.

A second male Rufous showed up yesterday. Of course now there is a territorial battle going on.

He's a beauty Adel. I can't believe these birds are so late coming here this year. So happy to hear they're at your house anyway. If you happen to hear a loud yelling some day soon, it's just me finally seeing one here.LOL

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

You west-coasters are so lucky to have Hummers so early in the year (compared to the rest of us)!! Nice shots all!

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

I'm still waiting, too, and they are at least a week overdue now. The flowering quince is all ready and waiting for them, too.

Marlton, NJ

Nice one adel!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Finally!! My first Rufous male arrived yesterday. He's gorgeous and has his adult coloring.

He wasn't very hungry, probably because there are lots of manzanita trees in bloom, not to mention other blooms that are full of pollen.

He is gorgeous duc!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Congrats! He's a cutie.

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Congratulations, Duc! I got a fleeting glance at my first hummer this afternoon. So fleeting that I couldn't even ID him. Hopefully he will return this evening. It cetainly is about time isn't it?

we become slaves to these beautiful wonderous little birds!

Klamath River, CA

The hummer population here has grown to 4 male Rufous, 1 female Rufous and 1 female Anna's.

This male Rufous has decided that the rain guage is his guard post for a feeder that is 6 inches away that he has claimed as his.

This male Rufous has claimed this feeder and uses a tree that is 2 feet away as his guard post.

Very nice ones adel!!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Great pictures Adel. Glad you have so many. My Anna's are still playing nice and sharing the feeder one at a time. I notice they're mostly spending time at a large honeysuckle shrub across the street, then rushing on to our house to drink more, then returning to the shrub. I'll have to get this shrub identified because they sure love it.

Vanislandgirl, yes, we are slaves to these little ones, but it's willingly!! Can you believe when we have 3 or 4 feeders going on hot days, we plan or days so as not to be away from the house longer than 3 hours!! Have to keep the feeders full and cool.

Great shots duc! That is a beautiful shrub!
