First Daffodils 2010

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

jmorth, so that's how you always get your bulbs to bloom so early. Seems like you always have the earliest stuff in zone 5. Very nice!

Here are Sir Winston Churchills really coming into bloom today...

Patti - another gorgeous composition.

And yes, Jmorth always has the first goodies here. It's a signal to watch more closely!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

patti, I've place my order for a daff that is suitable for my area but looks like your Feb. Gold. I'm crazy about those long trumpets.

everyone's pics are so nice and make me feel a wee bit more comfortable today when it's 87 deg. in my neck of the woods. I'm hoping we will get at least another cold front in Apr.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

These are very nice and I am happy the rain stopped for Easter. No sun but I will take the dry spell. It was nice to photograph a few blooms today.

Love these. They are so bright and cheery.

These (noid?) I love and wish I had more. It's fun however when they pop up here and there in the garden.

Nice show BeaHive. We had a foggy morning, but no rain, then it cleared and is lovely now. I took some pictures this afternoon, but haven't downloaded them yet. Patti

Could be Ice Follies. Is the cup flat? But there are so many. Patti

Finally some color!
NOID daffs.

Neal, ! realized I missed your question above. Indeed you sent me myosotis, in both pink and white. I think I see them coming up. The mertensia I installed them around them has broken dormancy. All but one of your wonderful geraniums made it through the winter and are growing. What wonderful plants – where have I been?

Bea, your daffs are such a shot of sunshine. Really wonderful.

Janet and Maxine, don't you love that very first daff? No matter what kind, or how small. I sent up a whoop when I saw my first one (neighbors scratching their heads...)

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm just thrilled as I miss treated them very badly and for them to reward me with blooms is incredible!

Janet

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Great, Donna! The Myosotis are blue and white, but I'd sure love some of the pink ones. But just wanted to make sure you're not shocked when they bloom blue, LOL.

South Lake Tahoe, CA

Love your photos Beahive!

We received another 12"+ of fresh snow on Easter day.
Had a special Easter Egg Hunt for the kids at Kirkwood Ski Resort.
Lots of fun while working in a blizzard.

Can hardly wait for the thaw hopefully in early May for my daffodils and tulips to see some light! then I can post some photos. :-)

Babette

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Babette - snow? Did you say SNOW?

And Neal - DUH! I meant blue and white. It's the drugs.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Lots of pretty ones, everyone! So fun to see the range of narcissi in everyone's collections.

And as usual I love your daff thread, steve! Looks like you have had another great season down TX way.

Ours are in high season right now. Took lots of pics this a.m. but my computer is being tempermental and won't let me download. Boo hoo.

Had four butterflies around the daffs and hyacinths (and other bloomers) too this week which is a new early record for us.

Gem, just wondering...can you remember the name of the fairly small yellow daffs you sent me a couple of years ago?? They are just stunning naturalized under the dogwood and would love to do the whole woodland lot line with them if I can find them from a supplier. I thought they were an old-fashioned southern 'jonquil', but I can't seem to find a look alike.

They are very very charming and dance in the wind. I think of you whenever I look out the kitchen window at them, btw! (-:

I just love that planting in the boxed gardenbed. And the red-orange tulips just make it all pop. Very nice!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Jmorth, tulips are annuals in my area. I find them too expensive an annual but seeing your pic, I think I could swing buying a dozen red tulips and put them here and there in my daff clumps. I'm copying your lovely idea next year, hopefully I can find a late single red.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

J, it's just gorgeous. I see that you have tulips popping up as well. I do too.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Greetings, Voss. How about this for a single late red? Not expensive. And in my yard single lates actually perennials, as I discovered when Maureens, a single late I could not dig up 3 years, came back like gangbusters anyway.

Jmorth's presentation is gorgeous and it would be great if you could echo it "down south".

tabasco, those are the heirloom species, Narcissus pseudonarcissus. I've got some fat clumps that have to be moved, so I'll have more to send you this summer. Aren't they just the best little naturalizers! Brent&Becky's used to carry them, but they haven't been in the catalog the last couple of years.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I agree, what great photos, beahive, and jmorth, your flower box looks wonderful. Love the look.

Maxine, congrats on your beautiful first daffs. Welcome to spring!

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Will have more to post soon. Buds, but weather has cooled off radically, but this is Wi.
Mother Nature is a tease, just when you think spring is her too stay, she throws you a ringer.

Thanks everyone for posting the lovely pictures. I so enjoyed the color and all of the different daffs.
Steve, did the daffs I sent you last fall bloom?
Mine will soon be opening.
Should look for some more to tuck in places.
My lilies are [some] just starting to emerge.

Maxine

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Maxine,

Did they look like this? This picture is from a couple of weeks ago.

I do not remember ordering these and these are in the apprx. spot I planted yours though as you know I am horrible about labeling.

If these are yours they were BEAUTIFUL!

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

The ones in front aren't mine, but the orange cup'd one in back is mine or is now yours.
Might just have to order some of the front ones.

Fort Worth , TX(Zone 8b)

Gemini-sage -- the closeup picture you posted on April 3rd -- what are those daffodils? (the ones with the yellow cup and orange rim) I think they are wonderful and I'd love to get some for next year.

I am loving everyone's pictures in this forum.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

NLaw, those are 'Pink Charm' I believe. They had just opened and didn't have their mature coloration yet. The cups have now turned cream with a salmon rim and green eye. They've been an excellent performer here.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

My WP MIlners are serving the purpose I had for them - protecting my tulips. These tulips, the kaufmanniana Hearts Delight, have been impossible for me to grow for years, because the rabbits would dig them up and eat them or chew the few they didn't eat. Look how the daffs protected them! I did this around my yard with anything they tended to chew.

Good idea! And a pretty combo!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Thank you Neal. The other foliage is the remains of iris reticulata. I love to pack 'em in!

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Donna, those are so pretty! I have a few species tulips, but have never seen those Hearts Delight ones before!
My wish list just keeps growing and growing and growing. . ..

Today a neighbor came and knocked at my door. I invited her in, but she kind of laughed, and said, "Oh, I didn't really need anything. I just wanted an excuse to come smell your flowers!" My front bed is a riot of daffodils, hyacinths, muscari, and even a few early tulips right now. I wish my camera was working! LOL I told her she didn't need an excuse, and that she could come smell the flowers any time. :)

Steve, I've been holding my breath, hoping that Silk Road lily you brought to RU last year would come back. I was worried, because the one that wasn't really Silk Road came up over a week ago. Today, it started poking its way out! I did a little dance! I think we'll have to schedule our family vacation around that Silk Road lily this year. I don't want to miss the blooms again! ;-p

My neighbors probably all think I'm nuts (they are much more into flat, perfect grass than flowers), but I think they're coming around. I've been giving away starts of daylilies and perennials whenever I can, and trying to convert my new home owner friends. What a nice disease to spread. . .

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi Angie,

Well that sucks - at least you got one "legitimate" one; the other was from Wayside/Park and I think they sent 'Triumphator" instead because I planted some in my front beds and what came up was, well, not Silk Road. I have ordered SR from them before without a problem. The larger one you got was from Lily Garden however and it should have been legit. I am SO sorry about that.....I will make sure I bring you a couple more to the RU - REAL ones ;-)

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL Steve, I sure wasn't complaining! Just wanted to let you know it made it through our cold Illinois winter! I love lilies of all sorts. I was just so happy that the real Silk Road survived, and I'll get another chance to see it bloom! I won't be able to make it to the RU this year. . .work complications. I still owe you big time for trekking all the way up from Texas with my name on a Silk Road in the first place! :) Nice to know what the mystery lily probably is, though. I'll have to get a picture when it blooms this time, and compare it to Triumphator.

Sorry, this whole thing is OT on a daffodil thread. I just saw the lily coming up when I was checking my daffodils , and knew I could find Steve here to celebrate. . . Back to our regularly scheduled programming! (wink)
