First Daffodils 2010

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Bea, those are lovely! I was bad last year, and never labeled the ones I planted last fall. I'm usually a stickler for labeling, if I know the name of the variety. Now I'll have to go out with my packing lists and some pictures, and try to figure out which was which so I can get the labels on them! They are finally beginning to bloom! For a while, the only blooms were on the no-ID's that were here when we bought the house. They are the first to bloom without fail! I've tried and tried to dig them up and move them out from behind some shrubs, but they apparently have gotten deeper as time has gone by. I'd like to move them to the front, where they can be better appreciated, instead of looking like someone tossed them in a pile behind a wiegela and forgot about them. ^_^

Those are terrific, Beahive...! You always take such nice shots.

Here is "Curly Lace", one of my favorites

The Jonquillas tend to bloom later than most other Narcissi - here are Quail, Hillstar, Curly Lace, Bella Estrella, and Suzy (other side of drive; hard to see colors well) in the same picture

Really lovely. I am surprised at the difference in growth on my daffs this year. Some have been blooming for close to aweek while others are juist breaking out of the ground. And everything in between.

so, nobody's purchased daffs from Terra Ceia?

we were at our E TX property last w/end and I missed most of the daff show. However, I got to take a mediocre pic of the last Salome and the last Replete. Must have been a beautiful display, sigh.....maybe next year I'll get to see it. We also noticed that there were at least 3-4 bulbs that were growing about 2 ft away from where the rest were planted. Did the squirrels do that? I think runaway bulbs have been discussed b4, but I don't remember in which thread.

Steve- What are the orange trumpet ones in Post #7656193 of March 25th? They are just lovely. Of course, they are all lovely but those are extra lovely :-))

I had to look at my daffoldils thru the window today as its just raining too much to spend time outside. I did see that the poor things are way down on the ground from all the heavy rains.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Rita - I think that one is "Border Beauty" that I got at either Van Engelen or Scheepers. One of the last "not sold out" ones I bought and I am so glad I did - one of my very favorites. You will LOVE it.

I only bought 20 but they must have been double-nosed bulbs as it seems I have many more flowers than that.

I will get more next fall.

I am so sorry to hear about your rains :-( Was just listening to the radio on my way home from work and they were talking about the epic flooding in Rhode Island. Just across the water from you I know. I wish you luck and dryness!

These are actually on top of my daffodils - chionodoxa Pink Giant.

I am gonna try those next year, Donna - yours are always so pretty!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Steve.

It should dry out by tomorrow. We are on high ground here so it never floods.

I think I might order more daffs in the fall from Van Engelen or Scheepers. We will see. I already ordered 190 for fall from Brenk and Beckies, all fancy kinds :-))

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Rita, both are great sources and I use both. You can't lose.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I can see that things are really popping for Steve and Bea. But Jmorth! Does half a zone make that much difference? My daffodils are all still in the bud phase!

And Rita, I agree with Steve about your sources. I order primarily from Scheepers and B&B these days, and I'm really happy with the results.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Apparently Donna, I've several clumps of daffodils outside blooming now.

70 today. My chionodoxa - all three colors - are going nuts, and I can see daffs in bud next to them, but, as they say, no cigar. But Jmorth, it should be soon!

Donna

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Donna, if your daffodils are anything like your lilies, they'll be fantastic.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Donna- I know Brent and Beckies has good quality as I have ordered Lilies from them. I just wanted to get my bulb orders in early this year so that I know I have some bulbs coming. This way I can still add more this fall from VE if I want to. But if I forget about it, I still have the BB order coming.

Here is a front bed today - Sir Winston Churchills (white ones) are finally starting to bloom.

Steve, both front and back look great. What else do you have in those backyard beds for interest once the spring bloomers die down?

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Rita! Well, same thing as in the front.....peonies, lots of lilies, phlox, daylilies, and I also have a shaded hosta bed.

I am not very original LOL ^_^

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Ha, ha. Sounds good to me. I am not very original either. I reuse the same types of plants like daylilies, lilies, roses, iris and such in my gardenbeds all around the place. I do have lots of shrubs though and also some butterfly, bee and hymmingbird attracting things like Agastache, Sedum, Coneflowers, Milkweeds, Joe Pie Weeds, Four O'clocks and others.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Well Rita seems our tastes are similar - I also have lots of irises, coneflowers, sedum, a butterfly bush, and shrubs.

^_^

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Gorgeous, Steve! It's filled in with color beautifully!

I need to come up with a good way to mark spots now that need additional bulbs this fall. I'm so bad about digging into bulbs that are already there when the fall bulbs roll in!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hiya neal. why don't you take pics of bare spots. That's what I'm doing.

Steve, you must be the talk of your neighborhood. I'd charge admission if I were you, lol

I got the B&B catalog yesterday and put a star by all the "possibles". I will revisit my notes in the summer.

As a general comment, those species daffs called Hoop Petticoats (bulbicodiums) did not appear last year or year before. I'm giving up on them but you'd think that being species they'd do better. Go figure, must be for cooler areas.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Nery, I'm a real dope! Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for filling in my cerebral gap, LOL. I've read that Hoop Petticoat daffs commonly behave that way, even in cooler areas. Come to think of it, I had planted some a few years ago at my old place, and only saw some grassy foliage.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I have read the tip to put golf tees in those spots. Not sure if one is supposed to put the golf tees were there are bulbs or were you want to put bulbs. But I bet either method would work.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Thank you Jmorth, for the sweet compliment.

Steve, you are moving at record pace. It’s all so gorgeous.

Hey Neal, I wanted you to know that all but one of your geraniums have broken dormancy and they are clearly going to be fantastic with my roses.

Rita, do let us know what you’ll be ordering. It’s such fun to look at others’ dreams – I think that’s what planning gardens is. That’s why it’s such fun watching Steve build his new garden. Something you rarely get to see; Steve takes a big old bite out of life – so cool!

81 degrees today. Lilacs arepopping and all 3 colors of chionodoxa are in full bloom. Finished cutting down all the grasses. YES!!!!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Awesome, Donna! I was wondering how they were doing while I was in the garden yesterday, looking at how mine have burst into growth. Did I send you some Myosotis, perennial forget me not? I'm so excited to see those babies bloom!

With the arrival of April has come a bunch of Daffodil blooms! Will be back with pics!

Fortissimo has opened with the warm days we're finally getting!

Aww thanks all, you are much too nice - high praise coming form such accomplished gardeners as yourselves!!

Well CONGRATULATIONS Neal! What a beautiful shot - I love Fortissimo. So big and showy.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Agree, great shot of Fortissimo.

I finally am getting some too. Here is a collage that includes some of these that have bloomed so far Rijnveld's Early Sensation, Small Talk, Gipsy Queen, Tete a Tete, February Gold, Largo, Jetfire, and an old NOID and perhaps Narcissus Division 6 - Cyclamineus 'Mite', but I have to check for that tag tomorrow. I should have a whole mess more out tomorrow Patti

It's 7am and I have the windows open! Spring has really arrived! Of course I'm sunburned, my hands are blistered and full of splinters, back and legs are sore, and....I'm thrilled! LOL

Neal, how stunning. Congratulations! We opened our windows too (upper 70's) but I had my sunblock on. What a great combination of colors and textures. It rocks.

I got a shock last evening. I grew pink chionodoxa to go with my white and white and pink lilies, only to find that they do not bloom simultaneously. But my first Mount Hood showed up yesterday - last year the first one opened on April 18th! Long after the chionodoxa were gone. Is this happening to anyone else?

Thumbnail by DonnaMack
Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Donna! Seems I've got more blooming simultaneously too. I think the delay in spring warming put some early stuff behind, and when it did warm up, everything got going. I noticed 'Thalia' opening today, and this seems kinda early for them here.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Neal, Patti, congrats again and what beautiful displays. Seems spring is in full swing for you now as well! It is kind of fun as even here on DG we see this cycle of members' bloom times in relation to our zones and where we are geographically.

Donna, I think it is this stretch of warm weather we all in the interior seem to be having. Most of my stuff was weeks late due to the cold winter but over the past week it has been shocking how quickly everything is growing. My Sir Winston Churchills are one of my later-blooming daffs and normally bloom around April 1st for me - everything else was late but they are right on time and are in bloom now. However, my Dutch Irises normally bloom with them and they are not showing any signs of blooming yet. But the peonies are shooting up at a record pace after a very slow start.

Maybe it just depends on the plant!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Patti, those pictures are just gorgeous. Nantucket must be a great place to be if your are blooming like that!

Steve, and Neal, it's unpredictable but in my zone that's great. Everything is early - and by the way, I spotted Silk Road nubbies. Unbelievable!

Topolino (mayhaps) - all my outside daffodils were originally forced inside, when transplanted outside, other than mapping general area with particular name, merely marked daffodils, thusly, not always sure of variety...)
