Pea Question

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have 3 different varieties of peas to plant this season, Wando, Alaska, and Tom Thumb Shelling. Can I plant these close together or should I plant them in various places in the garden to prevent any cross pollination?

Also, I plant to plant them at the base of some round trellises. How many plants per trellis will be good and not too overcrowded?

I am trying peas for the first time this year "Green Arrow" got the seeds from seed savers exchange and started them a week ago. I do not think you would have to worry about cross pollination unless you were planing to save seed for next year - but do not know for sure. - I will ask around.

Cross pollination is only an issue if you are planning on saving seed for yourself or to trade or sell (as previously mentioned). If you plan to eat or sell the edible produce, cross pollination is rarely a problem with home gardening. I do not have a great answer about worries about this if you do not want cross pollination if you want to save seeds, as I am also wondering that about a few things, such as sweet corns. My plan right now is to stagger plantings so that the plants are in bloom at different times. An alternative, it seems to me, is to keep plants apart using greenhouses or other covers and using fans for creating wind pollination inside such secluded areas or hand pollinating.

I am eager to see where this discussion goes...
