Hello all, I'm new to this forum thing but giving it a try. I'm looking for a good company to order shallot bulbs from. So far, I'm not finding many who either have them in stock or I can't really tell if they're reliable or not. Ideas? Thanks!
Do you know a good source for SHALLOT bulbs?
Hi. I don't grow them, but I know Ronniger Potato Farm sells shallots. They are an awesome, reputable company - no worries ordering from them!

Hope this helps...

Thanks for your reply and welcome! I'll check Ronnigers out!

1) True shallots, Allium oschaninii, are only available for late summer/early autumn delivery. They are easy to grow, take some work to harvest, and do not keep long. They only come in bulb form. They are the tastiest shallot, but are somewhat challenging to prepare since the outer skin is tough.
2) The other kind of shallot is actually a type of multiplier onion, Allium cepa var. aggregatum. Multiplier onions are very easy to grow and extremely easy to harvest, can be planted in the fall (best) or early spring, and keep very well. If you order this type, make sure that you order product that comes in bulb form. Some modern hybridizers have developed a so-called true seed form of what they call shallots, but they either only produce single bulbs, or barely divide.
The best comparative descriptions online are at www.KitchenGardenSeeds.com (no relation). You could also try www.TerritorialSeed.com.
Since you are a beginner, try orderingshallots/multiplier onions at www.MainePotatoLady.com. The prices are very reasonable and the customer service is excellent.
Good luck!
queenbee,
If you strike out on mail order shallots, a local farm supply store has them for sale.
DG me for information.
D. Landreth Seed Company has shallots available as well. They are very a reputable company that has been selling seeds for over 200 years. http://www.landrethseeds.com/
