Sports Talk!! Part 3 - March Madness!
Wall st. Journal had an article about teams which have a high rate of appearing in the tournament & will not be there this yr. Perhaps, but why the fuss? Coaches jobs may depend on appearing, but the other coaches have jobs also, & kids with talent should not have to attend a small group of colleges with high athletic programs. As a GM of someone attending school this next fall, I feel for others trying to raise funds to attend school. Athletes as well should be encouraged to graduate.
While Grant was napping today, I tuned into the Mets first spring game---didn't recognize many players, but some impressed me & they beat Atlanta 4-2....Yay!
They'll be finding this guy's body in a ditch.

No, you will not find the body. Will be sent to Siberia.
Maybe under the Olympic stadium they're building in Sochi.
Typical authoritarian reactions, although here we fire & yell at coaches of losing teams, don't we.
It's all about the medals for some--the heck with sportsmanship & good times.
Russians/Soviets were always like that.
Everyone likes success. We cried about few medals when we didn't get them. No sports ministers to fire though. I don't see Austria crying. Younger people will rise & win in the future.
I can imagine that if Canada did not win gold in hockey, some heads may well have rolled.... Might not be anyone to fire, per se, but they sure would have taken a lot of heat. Imagine the press on that!
UCONN men have reached a new low.
They sure have.
Victor, Beside UCLA, the only other team with more than UConn women's 69 wins is a previous UConn Huskies 70 game win streak
Wha-no problem. Not only is baseball season made for Yankee-Red Sox barbs, I have no great love for A-Rod.
that's good dave:)
my wife calls him axle rod because he walks like he's got something stuck up his butt.
Something stuck in his axle??
You got a problem with the way all Yankees walk?
mostly the left side of infield

The constant camera time for Vonn reminded me of Jeter.
She's not the only great skier, but has been better about all the attention that Miller was. He had to turn 32 to grow up.
Interested in a psychological explanation for your fixation on Jeter & A-Rod's ambulation?
funny dave - first remember it was my wife that named him axle rod not me:) between the walk and the mickey mouse gloves he needs more analysis than any of us:)
jeter is just the cocky kid who knows how he should look and speak.

And not play ball???
He is a good player for the wrong team.
Mets won a real pitcher's duel yesterday---17-11. Davis continues to impress me.
Yay for the UCONN women! 71 straight wins & counting.
Amazing.
Do both sides win the intra-squad games?!!
DS hates this time of year. He's not a bbal fan. I had him during March Madness 20 yrs. ago (sun.)
Maybe that's why?!! ^_^
Could be, it was great during labor, I didn't have to concentrate on anything. DH just let me know who was playing and the scores.
LOL, Victor...I know they scrimage with guys, it seems to help. Won again tonight...takes some of the sting away from the men's woes. Ike Davis hit another homer for the Mets.
classy move today with nomar retiring as a red sox
Indeed! It wasn't the fairy tale career it started out as, but he had a nice career and I'll always remember his time with the Red Sox fondly. I think he'll do well on ESPN from what I've seen of him so far.
boston.com has a video of the press conference on it front page - nomar got a little choked up
It is too bad that injuries sabataged his career. (sp. on that one).
Mathematician's baseball predictions:
ukiet predicts the following records for each team in the Major Leagues:
AL East: Yankees – 103-59; Rays – 93-69; Red Sox – 92-70; Orioles – 71-91; Blue Jays – 70-92.
AL Central: Twins – 92-70; White Sox – 85-77; Tigers – 74-88; Royals – 72-90; Indians – 67-95.
AL West: Rangers – 82-80; A's – 81-81; Angels – 80-82; Mariners – 77-85.
NL East: Phillies – 90-72; Braves – 88-74; Mets – 82-80; Marlins – 76-86; Nationals – 72-90;
NL Central: Cards – 91-71; Cubs – 86-76; Brewers – 78-84; Reds – 74-88; Astros – 73-89; Pirates – 66-96.
NL West: Dodgers – 88-74; Diamondbacks – 85-77; Rockies – 84-78; Giants – 80-82; Padres – 77-85.
Baseball prospectus has a much different prediction:
AL East: Red Sox 95-67, Rays 94-68, Yankees 89-73, Orioles 76-86, Blue Jays 72-90
AL Central: White Sox 81-81, Twins 81-81, Indians 80-82, Tigers 79-83, Royals 75-87
AL West: Mariners 86-76, A's 84-78, Rangers 80-82, Angels 76-86
NL East: Phillies 87-75, Braves 85-77, Marlins 79-83, Mets 77-85, Nationals 77-85
NL Central: Cardinals 91-71, Reds, 79-83, Cubs 78-84, Brewers 77-85, Astros 76-91, Pirates 71-91
NL West: Dodgers 86-76, Diamondbacks 81-81, Rockies 81-81, Giants 80-82, Padres 78-84
Two things to note: Based on these predictions, the Yankees wouldn't make the playoffs and the Nationals would win as many games as the Mets! I'm a Red Sox fan so I have reason to hope that these both come to pass, but I'd be lying if I said I believed they will.
Who is paid to predict the unpredictable? Sort of like basketball ratings before their season ever starts.
Merlin Olsen dies. Great player and great guy.
Rumors about a Pujols for Ryan Howard trade are surfacing. Why would the Cards even consider that??! Supposedly the thinking is that they will not be able to sign Pujols when he goes free after '11. Maybe the Mets will pay 400 million for him - after he gets hurt.
