Beware of Rose Thorns?

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

A couple of weeks ago I was pruning some dead wood out of a great big old rose with mighty thorns...one got me across the thigh...tore my pants. My leg was tender, but whatever...a week later thought I was getting the flu...achy joints. That night in my bath I happened to notice that the spot on my thigh hadn't healed yet...I touched it and discovered the thorn still there. Took the thorn out aches better by morning. Did some research and read that there is great discussion about toxins on some rose thorns...has this happened to anyone else? Dee

Yes Deed and it really set me back' I too thought it was the flu' I had a general weakness for a couple of days'Sis'

i got one stuck in my thumb like a splinter and it really swelled up! i had to dig it out with a needle and it was weeping a lot, sorry to be disgusting but it was like yellow puss. was ok and healed great once the thorn came out. what sort of toxins are there in rose thorns? maybe it's the plants natural defence.

Its a good idea for al gardeners to make sure there tetnus shots are up to date.
I beleive they are good for 10 years.

I got mine last year.

Especially gardeners who grow roses or work around compost alot.

I read of a gardener who was stuck by a rose thorn, and there was an infection at the site that just wouldn't clear up, despite antibiotics. Problem was they were not treating the wound properly, because it was a fungal infection caused by the rose's blackspot. Something I have tried to be aware of when pruning! John

That's good to know too John, thanks' Hadn't occured to me either,so much to learn so little time, lol' Sis'
