Thoughts about "Pepino Dulce"

Monroe, WA(Zone 8a)

I don't know how many people grow the Pepino Dulce in their garden, but I plan to try this season.

I have stored seed from a store bought Pepino Dulce fruit which I am going to grow this season.

I have seen this called "Pepino" (Spanish for "cucumber") , "Pepino Melon" (thus "cucumber melon"), "Pepino Dulce" (spanish for "sweet cucumber"), and "Melon Pear".

None of these names make any sense and I recommend a more appropriate English name be used, such as one of the following: "Sweet Tomato", "Sweet Melon Tomato", "Sweet Eggplant", "Sweet Melon Eggplant", "Honeydew Tomato", "Honeydew Eggplant", or some better idea. As I always hated cooked eggplant as a kid, I have not brought myself to try a fresh one to compare the taste of an eggplant to the fruit of S. muricatum, but if it is close to an eggplant taste then it should be more closely associated with eggplant. This is clearly related to and very similar to both tomato and eggplant, so to use words like cucumber, melon, or pear to name this plant and the fruit is pretty ridiculous.

I can't wait to see how my harvest goes! Let me know what you all think about the name of this plant/fruit and if you've grown it before. :-)
