Hi,
I would like information about the best wood to use for beds which will be odd sizes so that I can't use pre-made systems. I also would like ideas about the depth of chicken wire to put in the ground to keep out burrowing wildlife. And I would welcome any other helpful information relating to raised beds!
Thanks very much.
Linda
Raised beds for vegetables in southern Maine
Linda, if you can afford to do so, use a composite product like Trax. Lowes and Home Depot have their versions which are somewhat less expensive. The wonderful thing is you buy it and build your beds ONCE. The stuff is made for decks - never needs any maintenance - is not treated so it's perfectly safe for veggie beds and, even for flowers you at least know you're not putting something unnecessary into the soil. It cuts like regular wood and you can get it in a couple of muted colors. I've built three 4' x 8' beds out of the stuff so far. Downside is that it is initially expensive. A 16 foot board can run $30. Whatever you use, don't buy treated for veggies.
