Hello-
I need some advice about planting bulbs.
The dirt in my yard is packed with rocks (big and small) and clay, and I'm wondering if I can add garden soil over the dirt and then plant the bulbs in the new soil. I'd appreciate any help! Thank you!!
planting method for bulbs
How much soil are you planning on adding?
Some bulbs need to planted pretty deep.
I am container gardening. I have purchased a kit from Costco called a suncast wooden kit. It has three pods and i think it will be fun. I live in a large housing area so i am allowed to plant things.I also have 20 ceramic pots. I want to plant summer bulbs in the pots, help!sulyn
thank you for the help. I am trying to figure out how many bulbs per container, I am reading the directions which say plant bulbs 15 inches apart. how would that make any drama. A pot with one flower in it. Like Liatriss, day lilies, phlox/?Any more thoughts on this?
how do i figure out which zone i am in? I live on the coast in northern oregon?
To edhjennifer:
I planted daffodils on the side of a rocky/ clay hard hill. I used a post-hole digger and a pick-ax to make holes. What I did was make the holes bigger than I needed and then mixed it with good soil when I backfilled. They are still coming up and have spread out -- this is 8 years later.
If you want to only plant in a layer of good soil you will need to make a raised bed and make it pretty deep! Most bulbs are planted at least 3 or 4x as deep as the bulb is in diameter. (a 2" bulb would be planted 6 to 8" deep) and you need room for it's roots to go down from there.
