Brown dry tips of leaves

My wife bought a palm tree in a 6" pot. She placed it in our living room and noticed after a week that the ends of palm leaves are getting brown and dry. We also noticed that the stem seems to be weak that it breaks.

Can you tell me why this happens?

Can you post some pictures? Getting brown tips on leaves is not unusual with houseplants--sometimes it can be low humidity, sometimes salt buildup in the soil (from fertilizer, hard water, etc), and sometimes it can be something like a fungal problem. The stem thing is harder to guess but again a picture might help.
