Help with Identification! Thanks!

New Bedford, MA

Hi I received this plant as a gift, and it didn't come with any information.
I have had it for about 6 months and have noticed the leaves starting to die in the middle of the leaf.
Any help would be great!

Is there any way that you can get a picture of the damage. A little better lighting would make a big difference in helping us see what's going on. The plant is probably a peace lily, spathiphyllum, but it could also be an Aglaonema because the pic is kind of dark and I can't tell if the leaves are marked. The care for either is similar. Get a pic of the damage or you can look up the plants above to see what they need.

Here are some better pics. I seem to remember the person that bought it said something coming from the corn family?

Your plant is a Aglaonema.

Yes, for sure aglaonema. Here is a nice article written by one of our aroid experts :).

How do you care for the plant? Is it in natural light or lamplight? Are you keeping the soil pretty wet or are you letting it dry off to barely moist before watering again? Do you ever drag your plant to the sink or tub and give it a shower, and do you flush the soil every so many waterings to leach out excess salts? My plant will lose some leaves, here and there, but it mostly looks healthy and I give it medium natural light and let the soil get barely damp before I water again, but I also give showers (to reduce spider mite incidence and dust) and flush the soil ((run a lot of water through) to keep fluoride and other salts from our water and fertilizers from building up in the soil.)

Hi thanks for the info. I just took off all of the dead looking leaves. I have it in the tub right now draining. I believe I over watered the plant. Will let it dry out some....Thanks!

That would be a Peace Lilly.

I concur that your plant is an aglaonema, commonly know as Chinese evergreen. It is not a peace lily.

AND--Aeglonemas are quite susceptible to different leaf diseases.
I know I have seen this described--but my Houseplant Problem-Solver book is at work.

I will try to remember to bring it home Sunday.
