What's Happening in your neighbourhood - Feb. 21 and later

Victoria Harbour, ON

Waving from sunny Barrie...48 degrees, looked at the long term forecast and much the same for all week although rain starting Friday for 2 or 3 days..still better than snow though..

`M` sorry to hear about Lorna`s dad, such virus`s going around and affecting a lot of the elderly..let`s hope they get his breathing under control..

Have to tell you a little story, you know I`ve been making these pocket bags, made 5 in total...Darlene`s birthday is on the 19th so one is for her, mom wanted one, June dropped in on Sunday and wanted to buy one, explained that there is $45.00 worth of material in them and couldn`t possibly charge to sell because each take about 5 or 6 hrs. to make, told her for her birthday I`d make her one, well her birthday is not until June 2nd and she said she wanted one before then, after negotiating we decided she`d pay for material and I`d do the labor as her birthday gift...

So this morning I left the bags on the table in the workshop because the girls use my home for crafting..Darlene picked the multi-colored one, June the black and green one..that left 3..phone to see which they picked and June went on to say (excited as can be) that she sold the other 3 for $45.00...OMG it cost me that to make them, she misunderstood, didn`t have the heart to say NO!

Guess I`m making more bags for mom and Aline..drats and more drats...things happen ..

Yesterday I bought another die for the accuquilt but haven`t even tried it out..too busy..with going to Buffalo this weekend I`ll not have time as well..now how does life get away from you, sooo busy, days turn into weeks and month in almost the blink of the eye...

Enjoy your day...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Stellar days in Thunder Bay are being interupted for a bit. We have rain falling on ice and melting snow, and I am SO happy we do NOT have to leave the house today !!
Took Lilly with me to go and get the paper this morning .. we have a LOoooooooooong driveway, and before you could say .. "OH NO' ! I realised i was walking on sheer ice .. DAWG .. my mind rolled back to the 2 broken ribs last year from my fall .. lets just say I walked with EXTREME caution .. and .. I will drive the car down until it improves .. that's if I can get to the garage !!!!

Betty .. sad little story .. but .. I guess your friend meant well .. but .......

Lorna's Dad is OK for now, no pneumonia, just a bad upper respiratory infection. Gave him IV antibiotics along with IV fluids, and he got home just past 9pm last night, says he feels great. Here's hoping he remains that way ..

Hope everyone has a super day

Ikkety poo news for Lorna ... she was to have a prosthesis fitting tomorrow, it has been moved to the 16th .. talk about disappointed !!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ooooooooh poor Lorna - I hate waiting, and I'll just bet any waiting I've ever had to do is Nothing next to the disappointment she must be feeling. oh poo!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

"M" was it not ready and that's why they've changed the appt.?

Glad you are hanging in Susan..all we can do some days!

Any news "M" on Lorna's dad?

Ohhh so cozy, I'm a heat freak, minute I come home I'm into the tub with almost boiling water..can't be too warm for me..

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Good to hear from Susan not good if she is squeeking through.
Marilynne , tell Lorna to keep her chin up and she will be back on her feet with all this waiting behind her. I'll keep my fingers crossed for her.
Those wood stoves sure can kick out the heat nowonder they are still around.

We have sunshine, blue sky's and not yet above freezing. I'm looking out the window at work watching a Magpie hide his food in the pine tree. LOL
Ann

Victoria Harbour, ON

What a wonderful sight Ann..been a long winter, only seen bluejays in my neck of the woods, keep watching for robins, doubt they will arrive till mid April..should go out and purchase more birdseed, my kitties are now outside for a few hours here and there, hate to encourage the birds only to have my hunters hunt them down..dull, wind cool but still enjoyable.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Geez Betty, some peoples kids eh!

I"m glad others are starting to see some signs of Spring. Our weather changes about every 20 minutes. Sunny and warm, then wind and rain, then some other mixture, all day long.

You guys are lucky to have Magpies, Cardinals and Cedar Waxwings. We don't have them this way.

Hoping that Lorna's dad and her appointments all end up well.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

just popped in for a second....... cleaning house for the realtor coming by.
Magpies........ boy, do we ever have those scolding little......... well, too much of a lady to say LOL

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I could live without the Magpies but would love to have the Cardinals and Cedar Waxwings!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

OOOOOOooooooooooo .. we had a Robin in the yard on Sunday past .. an amazing site :-)

Lorna's Dad is doing lots better .. on antibiotics .. but .. he has now developed a tendency to faint/fall .. sooo .. her Mom is reluctant to leave him alone, and he is NONE too happy about that !!
All lab tests are A OK .. so .. could just be the upper respiratory infection and it's inherent bug a boos ..

LoL Susan re the Magpies .. we have NONE here .. and I would sure like some :-)

Off to bed

Belated greetings to Susan. Are you listed in the daily birthdays? If so, I'm afraid I just missed it. I hope you celebrate into the weekend.

We are just finishing up a major flooring project in my kitchen. Tuesday they took out the old floor and subfloor. Wed. a new subfloor. Yesterday, filling where necessary and then laying the Armstrong tiles - heavy duty product with a lifetime warranty. Today, new quarter rounds, getting the toilet reinstalled in the powder room, door back on a closet and generally finishing. We're very pleased.

Have a great day.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

TGIF !!!!

Hanging my head here, I usually ALWAYS check the 'birthday list' when I logon to Daves, yesterday, well I didn;t and YEPPERS, when I looked last evening, there was TALLULAH_B !! So Ann you weren't the only one who didn't see the lisitng.

Love renos, but dislike the kaffufle while they take place .. when we had the kitchen re
done a couple of years back I swore, 'NEVER AGAIN' .. but I sure liked what I saw when it was all said and done ^_^

Have had a set of gloomy days here in Thunder Bay, but the weather folks are promising a warm and sunny weekend, and, since there's nothing I can do to change the weather, I guess I'll just live with what we get, altho, the MUD situation is starting to wear me down !!

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, HAPPY VACATION to any of you with holidays .. March Break starts today in Ontario .. know of several folks heading south.

Thank you for the birthday greetings!

It was a fun day yesterday. My boss, 3 other Drs, and a secretary came to sing Happy Birthday to me @ 10:30, then told me to come get some cake. My boss bought a Black Forest sheet cake. I got to go around the building and invite people to have it ^_^
When I got home I found a b-day pressie from a DG friend, on my deck, and a b-day card from my sister Alice, in the mail.
Had a quick bite to eat then off to choir practice - they sang to me, too lol Afterwards my DH & I went to pick up a pizza for a late night snack, then finished off the evening with a hot tub soak ^_^

I was amazed at these 4 men singing Happy Birthday to me lol It was so sweet! I told my boss that he "made my day" by doing this.
I found a lot of b-day greetings from DG, and DG friends, plus FB when I logged in this am - wasn't home long enuff to log in last night lol

Black Forest cake is hard to beat !!

The renos to the kitchen look wonderful Ann .. I popped over to a friends this morning to see how her kitchen renos are going .. lawsie .. quite the mess .. but .. it IS coming together .. they are having 2 skylights installed as well as a pantry .. this pantry is quite the piece of work !! It has sliding shelves .. both straight forward .. and sideways, talk about a great way to use space !!!

Enjoy your weekend

Hello Marilyn!!

The golden orb is in the sky, but it's windy & cool here. Snow has been going, but some is still around..... looking forward to spring ^_^

Have to do some de-cluttering and such for staging our home to sell ^_^

Victoria Harbour, ON

Photo's please Susan..before and after..excited to see the difference...

"M" news just said you had the same degree of weather that Las Vegas had today..imagine that!

Ann, you'll be thrilled to see the renovations complete..bet you are excited...

Left Thursday for Buffalo, had fun...when I left there had to be over 1 foot of snow, came back to no snow..lordy it's ugly outside, dirty, muddy but I can see some green coming through so happy days it is..

"M" glad to hear Lorna's dad is doing better, she certainly didn't need to be worrying about him when she's got so much on her plate.

A few have said the robins are back but I haven't seen one as yet..wonder if we'll get another few snow storms before old man winter leaves the area?

There was a contest re last snowfall and I won..will get a gift certificate ..if it's plants they'll not be able to send it over the border so I'll pass it along but it was fun playing..

I've got quite a mess going on here, making a rag quilt for Jeff, Christmas is coming you know..smack me if you want but I'll be ahead and you'll be saying, 'now why didn't we join Betty in getting things done' lol..doubt it..I'm just filling in time before I live outside in my gardens...

Lots of greenery going on, a couple of little paperwhites, lordy how do they survive the cold when they are soooo delicate?

Enjoy your evening..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Wooo Hooo .. our outside thermometer read 70F (20C) at 3pm this afternoon !!! Flies were buzzin about .. and yard clean up was in full swing .. Lorna was able to rake Lilly's compound on her own!!! A wonderful work out for her .. made me thankful I have 2 legs !!

So glad your trip was a good one Betty .. kudos an winning the contest and good luck with the rag quilt ..

Lots of folks on motorcycles out on the road here today .. I can't help but think we will PAY for this moderation in temperature ... our snowblower is still parked on the patio just outside the back door !!!

Off to bed .. another busy week on the horizon .. physio Monday, prosthesis fitting Tuesday, physio again Wed .. Thurs physio AND the funeral of a family friend .......... deeep breath .. POOF ^_^

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

nice i'm jealous we havent got over 63.. This week wont get higher then that either :(

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Well smurf .. maybe your temps are 'static' right NOW .. but .. Windsor tends to get pretty warm during the summer, not that Thunder Bay doesn't, but, it seems to happen here 'every so often' ...

Just back from walking Lilly, obvious frost around, but, the sunrise is STELLAR !!!

Off to physio with Lorna, then some shoppin !!!

~M~

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning all...

Smurf, sunny weather and higher temps are headed your way..imagine, weatherman was saying high of 16 -18 by Thursday...

I'm with you "M" everyone says winter is over but I'm keeping plastic on back deck, shovel next to the walkway..have seen blizzards mid April but it's been a strange winter so let's hope our being cautious is to no avail...

Lorna sounds as though she's progressing wonderfully, must be her positive attitude..nothing like working outside..

Sat out for about 5 minutes this morning, yukky looking, lots to clean, lots to burn but don't want to disturb the new growth which is bright green just incase we do get snow...listened for the birdies but didn't hear any..maybe this week I'll eye a robin then we know spring can't be far behind..

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

I been on the look out for a robin for weeks now.. see lots of birds even the odd fly, but have yet to spot the robin.. Betty, I hope you being ready for the "s" (4 letter BAD BAD BAD word I wont say) helps it stay away.. I dont think I can take much more of that, now that the ground is green i couldn't go back to the white.. I cant complain about the weather we've been having, its nothing really hot but, its better then a freeze, so i'll take it... My grasses are starting and i see buds on my hidrangeas so it cant be that far off...
jen

Victoria Harbour, ON

Might do the same Jen, go look at the trees and see if they are budding..I planted omg can't remember but must be about 10 flowering crabs, some maple and a few other flowering trees, am hoping they made the winter...maybe those robins know a little more than we do..lol

In my travels on the weekend did see a lot of Canada Geese heading north so the others can't be far behind...

Ooooh silly thing happened here at work, you all know just how hard I work, joking of course, was doing crochet, watching the new Alice in Wonderland on that movies channel I get off the web, had ear phones on, a call came in, I yanked the ear set off, oh/oh the little plastic piece went down into my ear..had to leave, go to the drugstore and pick up eyebrow plucker so the girls could pull it out...shaking my head here...

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

Oh i love flowering trees, Hubby however wont let me plant them.. He's one of them grass freaks and if theres even a stick on his grass he freaks out.. Its nice having the best looking grass on the block, but so is looking at a flowering tree.. Oh while I'll never have a fruit tree either.. I gave up on that battle.. Only one i can have is a mimosa tree, only cause he likes them and the flowers arn't that bad when they fall.. its planted now and its about 3 feet tall, so we'll see if it takes off this year.. I'm hoping so this is the 3rd year with it.. We plant alot of castor beans and cannas so it covers the hight problem we have due to no trees.. we only have 4 trees and we planted them all in the last 2 years so there still small.. 2 japanese maple wow do these look great planted with green plants.. a willow (not weeping cant think of the name) and the mimosa.. I think were adding an elderberry eva this year.. man those are stunning.. I like the darker leaves the best on plants cause i have so much green as it is...
Come on spring!!!!!!!

Hi All
Pleased to hear Lorna is out and about!
Susan it looks like your Birthday was fun and that's what it is supposed to be.
Smurf I think you will be able to convert your hubby with time.

Sounds like things are a buzzing around. On Saturday my DH said to me " can you hear the Robins? they're back!. I listened and all I could hear were some motorcycles.
He was refering to the Motorcycles!
Anyway he did temporarily hang a new bird feeder I got for Christmas with some rope from our big tree and not even 30 seconds later a Chickadee was on it! I will take some picks when he finnishes an arm he has made to go around the tree with out having to nail or screw it in anyway. He has had to play with it so that it won't damamge the tree at all and will support the bird feeder over the grass so the deck won't be covered with ......stuff.
The greenhouse was at 78 on Sunday with all roof vents open what a lovely place to sit for a bit with a book.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Here I am, did hear and feel your prayers...

Kyle and Noah were at their grandparents for the week of fun at the cottage, well it didn't start off well..

Without all the stories I got through the afternoon I'll give you the final update...

Surgery went well, they've managed to attach the end of the finger, stitch up where the skin had all but been deboned...we are thankful that he still has fingers and his arm...

Apparently he was out on his atv (gift from grandparents at Christmas) the cottage land they own has a lot of trails made for them by the grandfather..Kyle was driving and ended up in mud, pulled out the winch and got the machine secured, for some reason he tried to do something and hit the switch and winch started to work and in went his hand/arm...

Originally we were told that Noah had turned it on, but no, Kyle was alone...in pain he managed to get his cel phone out, call the cottage, his grandmother and Noah came to help, Noah tried and tried through Kyle's screeming in pain to release it but they had to call 911 / rescue to come and get him released then off to emergency..Noah is extremely upset because he couldn't help his brother...

Hospital is some hours away, Greg told me to get a good nights rest that all was fine, Kyle is sleeping and not for me to come..he and Melanie will stay, our friend Cathy is looking after their animals so no worries there...

I'll be thanking the Lord tonight for sure, could have been more tragic..I'm sure your prayers helped as well..
Thank you dear friends....

I'm sorry, I should have put a link here for explanation Here is an update from Betty in the General chat forum.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=7631809

I am a bit slow getting link, thanks for the update Betty. A few sighs of relief around the continent, I'm sure. Hope he heals up completely.
