DAILY PICS, VOL. 289

Sandusky, OH

Sorry Hack, for the cross-post.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

I saw a bunch of birds land in a tree in my "across-the-street" neighbor's back yard. Didn't know what they were at the time. When I worked the pic up, I realized they were a lot of Cedar Waxwings. I enlarged two of them. I like that yellow tail tip.

I don't mind, Burd, if you don't. Adds variety. :-)

I like the iridescence of this Common (I think) Grackle.

This Dark-eyed Junco was enjoying the seed on the ground.

Of course, I had plenty of Cardinals. Here's a female.

My last one tonight is a female House Sparrow. Not the best focus, though.

I'll post the rest tomorrow.

Good Night

Really good shot of the Thrasher, Hack. How wonderful to see a tree fruiting with Waxwings. Lucky you.

Burd, I think you can expect a visit from both Mrs Ed and Nanny with those Horned Larks. Wonderful shot of the Red-tailed hawk.

It's about time to start a new thread. Post all your new shots over here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1076861/

Elphaba, thanks for the welcome. Is 33 unusual? I'm so new at this I don't even know the norms. LOL We had a speaker on wild birds at my daylily club last month and it reminded me how much I enjoyed seeing them at my Granny's. I've really gotten into it.

Hey Nanny! Yep. Can you believe it? It's the new camera that's lost. I'm deathly afraid I've left it outside somewhere because that's the last time I remember having it but can't find it out there either. It's a good reason to really get the house in order.

pelletory, I've had a flock of around 15 male red-winged blackbirds but haven't seen any females that I know of. Could that be right? Are the females the same size?

Do RW blackbirds ever breed with the starlings? I have a male red-winged that has the starling like patterning on his back and wings.

A good start; depending on location, you could get as many more over the next few years, or even more than that.

They can form single-sex flocks, though don't always do so

They don't ever breed with Starlings; perhaps the one you mention is a female, or an immature male.

Hack, I love the Cedar Waxwings. I would love to see them in my yard. Had a female piliated woodpecker in my oak tree this morning but by the time I ran to get the camera, she flew off. I had a pair in the tree a couple of days ago and she was trying to enlarge the hole on my bluebird house. Here's another picture of the goldfinches and sparrows (I think) feeding below the feeders. First time I have seen goldfinches feeding on the ground but the feeders were so full of birds.
