Last year they would run like crazy but this year they will pose nicely.
DAILY PICS, VOL. 289
Oh darn I second guessed myself on that Rose...that was the one I kept looking at. AH well....
jhowdy...nice ones of the kestrel.....I guess I need a driving partner to get a photo of one. LIke Linth I see them on the wires all the time here.
Linth, your hemlock sure makes a pretty setting for your birds!
I am heading into town today so I am going to check out some cornfields for Horned Larks on my way out. The country roads where I am at are still very snow covered.
This Blue Jay shot was taken the morning we had freezing fog last week.
JH, Love the Red-bellied Woodpecker tongue shot!
3 handsome birds there Linth!
Beautiful Honeyeater Margaret!
Rose, Your Cardinal pair looks so sweet! Great shots.
Nanny, Freezing fog? Yikes. Nice Blue Jay shot!
Hi Everyone, Next week we'll be putting up the Sticky that will have 2010 Migration Maps for Hummingbirds, Orioles and (a new one) Barn Swallows!
Those birds better stay away from here for awhile.
:-) I know. I was wondering if the dates will be later this year so I'll probably include a map from last year to be able to compare dates.
Also links (with instructions) on how to read weather radar maps to see when songbird migrations will be good.
I'm happy waking up to the sight of birds busy at the feeder. Sipping coffee and enjoying today's thread. Red the American wigeon and Ringed-necked ducks are very interesting.
JH I too must have seen the American Kestrel here as well; I told DH they must be A.K. since they're tad smaller than most raptors, and perhap some bigger than a Robin -- so I gues-imate.
Pelle, the Osprey's hormone must be out of balance, lol. But like the writter has stated; "we can expect the unexpected." lol.
Linth, TT heading off with a whole peanut!!! I just adore those TT, and just as I thought why none has came to find the peanuts I set out yesterday. Just then I spotted this TT on a branch working at one (whole peanut) likes one of the woodpeckers. And, also Iris. My 'Percy' squirrel hasn't discovered the peanuts on a flat-form feeder after 24hours, he isn't that industrious after all. lol
Magaret, your N.H.'s Honeyeater and its whiskers. Make him/her looks like a wiseman compared to other innocient looking birds such as Goldfinches.
I snapped many pictures, but only this one has decent lighting. A cute-as a button Goldfinch.
Rose "spring is in the air Cardinal pair" Whooo hoooo, our temp. down here is getting to the mid 50F. today!
I sure enjoyed all the photos in that last thread!
Lily, I'll be interested to see if your orioles enjoy the orange slices-mine wouldn't go near them.
Elphaba, what a great beginning on this new thread. Sure would like to see one of those wps here.
Hack, great look on that robin. I've just seen a few of the red winged blackbirds here so far. What does the "5" on that goldfinch mean? Must have missed it if someone already asked.
Rose, great photo of the Harris'.
Adel, I know what you mean about that sun. Great captures, especially the stellar's!
Nanny, love that photo of the Amer. Tree Sparrow. Great nuthatch too!
Red, love your ducks!! They're all beautiful.
JH, fantastic captures of the kestrel. Love that "tongue" shot too!
Linth, that first cardinal is fantastic-hold that one for next years Xmas card.
Margaret, your honeyeater is just gorgeous.
Rose, love, love, love those cardinals.
Nanny, good luck on finding the horned larks, can't wait to see the photos. Freezing fog?
Pelle, I'm anxious for that new stickys. My first Rufous hummer should be here within the next two weeks and I can't wait!
Think I need to practice taking photos in the sun more. Here's a Scrub Jay.
Linth, We've seen quite a few Ring-necks this winter in OK. When we were watching these yesterday my wife remarked "Why do they call them Ring-necks instead of Ring-bills?" Good question. :-)
Here is a pic of one of another Slate-colored Junco.
Lot's of Goldfinches in the yard this a.m. The males are getting a little more yellow every day.
Duc, thus far. After 24 hours worth. My one and only B. Oriole hasn't found its way to the orange slices yet.
I can't believe how beautiful the pictures are on this thread.
Margaret, glad to see another one of your stunning photos. I just love your birds.
Duc, that scrub jay pic is so gorgeous. I just love the colors in it and the detail.
Red, that Junco is a wonderful shot. I had tons of goldfinches today too and some of them are really getting yellow.
Rose, glad your cardinal is OK. Last year one of my blue jays lost a leg. It was a bloody hole and he couldn't fly. He or probably she, kept feeding her adolescents anyway. I was sure she would die. She's fine. Still one legged obviously, but she can fly again.
Hack, Lily, everybody, love those wonderful birds!
My mockingbirds are back now the the GBBC is over. They've been fighting like crazy too and so have the robins. The White-winged doves are cooing and flashing their tails. Spring is definitely in the air.
Cute little Goldfinch Lily...don't you love their song. I am jealous of your Oriole and can't wait for ours to arrive. Have you tried putting out grape jelly for them?
Nice looking Junco Red...they will be gone before we know it.
Duc...What can I say...gorgeous shots and I am so happy to see your birds arriving. I really want to get some shots of the Tree Swallows this year.
I am looking forward to the Migration Maps, Pelle...so much excitement, so little time!
Nice ones Elph...that Blue Jay is too cute! I am glad to hear that your one legged Blue Jay is doing well.
Lily, Sweet pic of the Goldfinch!
Duc, I absolutely LOVE Tree Swallows so keep those wonderful pics coming!
Red, Cute Junco. I see a number of pink sided form here.
Elphaba, My Mockingbirds did the same thing here, nice shots!
What does the "5" on that goldfinch mean? Must have missed it if someone already asked.
duc, sometimes I use my 40D's manual focus and the "5" gives me something to focus on sharply. I don't always use a "5", Any number or letter will do. I also use the numbers or letters to ID a feeder so I can record what kind of seed was in it. That way I can more easily determine the preferred seed by which feeder I had to re-fill most often. At this moment, I have 15 hanging feeders working. I think having so many feeders is why I have a lot of birds of different species.

Ducbuclin... Oh, I love your tree swallow photo! That is excellent!!!
Glad to see you have a red-winged black bird pelle....I heard one trilling yesterday and thought I was nuts!
Welll.....I THINK I saw 2 Horned Larks....but they flew off before I got a pic. They were brown birds/with white underside... the right shape & size. But that is all I could really see so not for sure. I will be watching!
The birds I saw were farther down in this field where I found 2 groups of Canda Geese.
Please forgive the poor quality of the pic. but I'm so happy I couldn't keep it to myself. Momma BB has brought another family member to the suet feeder!!! The cohessiveness on these birds warms my heart. It appears that the one that brought other family member to the feeder, will perch on a tree and waits patiently for her turn. Look: There are a total of 3 BBs in this pix.
Rose, grape Jelly for my Oriole? Ha! talking about being eating out of the house! LOL. No I haven't tried that yet.
That is sweet Lily!! Congratulations!
Pelle...she is a beauty...I love the colors of the female Red-winged.
Nanny...OMG...you still have snow. Ours is just about gone and it is sunny again today!
Lily...How sweet is that...I am so happy for you. Have you heard them chattering to each other? They sound so sweet...my favorite bird don't cha know!! Yes...definitely grape jelly for the Orioles...they ate that better than oranges when they were here for the past two years!!
Thank you Pelle, I've got to go and get these little darling BBs some meal worms. They absolutely won my heart over in a New York's minute. lol. Oh not to mention, BB's houses, bird's bath and the works! LOL all the way to the Pet store.
dellrose - Common grackle, thanks. I still can't tell Common from Boat-tailed. And your Harris's Sparrow sure looks different from the sparrows I see. It's not in my Ga bird book, so I'll just have to enjoy it vicariously.
adelbertcat - Hum, that Steller's Jay, does look a little befuddled. But still a great pic. Its not in my book either, dog-gone-it. And that's a real nice looking Spotted Towhee.
nanny_56 - Wow, I sure like the pic of the White-breasted Nuthatch. Even with the fog, the Blue Jay looks nice. Wow, that's a lot of geese in your most recent posts.
reddirtretiree - I haven't snapped any Ring-necked Ducks since back in Dec. I've never photoed an American Wigeon. Nice
jhowdy - I didn't know that an American Kestrel was the only falcon with the ability to hover. I read about it and discovered it used to called a Sparrow Hawk (Tekiela, Birds of Ga, p159).
linthicum - "Nice series of photos, Hack." Thanks, I'm going to put on some collages after I finish my remarks here. I liked the pic of the Tufted Titmouse heading off with a peanut. I bought me some peanuts, too.
MargaretK - that New Holland Honeyeater is one nice looking bird. I always like seeing your bird pics.
dellrose - Nice closeup of the cardinal, I'm glad he survived, too. And the Cardinal couple is sweet looking.
ducbucln - nice capture of the Tree Swallow flying up to the occupied house. You're right, they are pretty birds.
reddirtretiree - I've never seen a Slate-colored Junco. Sweet
Elphaba - I like the pose of the two Mockingbirds on the line. Nice Blue Jay, too.
pelletory - your female Red-winged Blackbird looks like the ones I saw just the other day - they were Lifers for me. In fact, the female looked so different from the male, I thought I had found two Lifers.
Lily_love - I haven't had any luck with BB. What is in your feeders that they are eating. I'm gonna try some meal worms, too.
