Hello, I'm new to the forum.. We just moved into a house that we plan to be at for a while, and so we'd like to finally plant the apple tree my son started in a pot in kindergarten (he's now in 3rd grade) with the seeds from his snack apple, into the ground. We live in the Austin area of Texas, which is zone 8b, I think. His tree is about 3 years old, and is in a big pot. It's still living, stands about 3 to 4 ft high and has about a 1 inch thick trunk. We're really excited to finally plant it in the ground.. Oh and no worries about warning me of it not growing edible fruit.. I know that we have to plant two apple trees in order to get fruit and that apple trees grown from seed are not ideal and don't generally produce good tasting fruit.. we're just excited about the tree itself.. it's something our son started in kindergarten and we've really enjoyed watching it grow thus far, and want to put it in the ground without shocking it and killing it. Thanks very much for your help!!!!
Oh and I have one more question I got a shrub rose the other day at the store.. I'm assuming that since they are selling them out front right now, right now is the appropriate time to plant them? But when I assume things, bad things happen, LOL so I wanted to make sure.. I looked all over the label and it tells me HOW to plant it, just not when. Thanks so much!
When to plant apple trees? and a rose bush..
Do you get any frost down there? If so, just wait till after the frost date.
How is your tree doing? I hope it is still alive.
Usually, anything potted can be planted any time, though I still think it's best to avoid the heat--just for future reference. Be a good idea to mulch your son's little tree. Is he sleeping in the yard beside it?
