I need help starting and keeping a veggie garden in Anza, CA

Anza, CA

Hi all,
I'm new to this site, but ashamed to say a 14 year resident in Anza that can't grow a decent vegetable garden :)
Some years I've planted tomatoes that are "iffy" and I'm absolutely clueless about when to plant and what.

Any ideas will be truly appreciated!

I really want to be able to plant and harvest as many veggies as I can. Not just for my family, but for my pigs!

Thanks!

Well, ya could write a book about this & many have. My abbreviation is as follows.

It costs up front work, how much depends on how big a garden and where you're starting from preparation-wise. It takes continuing attention and work. If you enjoy the activity, no problem. If not, well . . . .

It takes soil that's not too extreme w.r.t. sandiness, clayeyness, pH, fertility. Over time, tilling in plant matter and correctly using fertilizer (inorganic or organic) will fix almost any soil problem. A soil analysis will tell you if the pH needs to be adjusted and appropriate chemicals to use such as lime or sulfur.

That good soil, water, and plant growth will beckon Mother Nature & she'll take her share. Regular attention will keep things under control.

Row planting, raised beds, and "earth boxes" are alternative methods. I'm partial to raised beds. In our little patch, heavy mulching works out well.

Your gardening neighbors are the best source of info about what vegetables and varieties do well in your area.

Start small, keep it simple. do what's enjoyable, grow things you like to eat, think both short term and long term.

Go for it.

BTW, where in CA is Ariza located?

Contact your county cooperative extension service for a chart on what to plant when.

I've had major problems trying to grow tomatos. Artichokes seem to do well.

Last year the mice and squirrels got more than we did. :(
