Pelle...I usually only see one RB nuthatch at the feeders in the winter. They are so shy and difficult to shoot. I let the log feeder go dry so that the shier birds would come up to the deck. Now that I got this shot, I will fill the log. Mission accomplished!
DAILY PICS VOL. 285
Yikes that looks cold Pelle! It just clouded over here, so I guess I've taken my last pics until Friday. I missed a whole thread. Y'all really do fill them up fast. I have to go back and find out what a black-crested titmouse looks like!
Sacar, LOVE those pics. You got some of the fastest little birds. I love the red-breasted nuthatch, very cool angle and love the snow going by.
Duc, wow on the quail! Very cool and the detail on the white-crowned sparrow is just amazing.
I see Sacar just posted a red-bellied woodpecker, so me too!
Nice ones Elphaba!
It's a shame the Great Backyard Bird Count isn't today, I would have some incredible numbers!
Beautiful sequence Dave.
We're at near white out conditions here.
Oh wow so many outstanding shots one here...and new people too!!
Hack...your getting really good at those collages!
Pelle... beautiful shot of the Junco!
Linth...I love your collection shot...wish I could something like that. And that jay with the do is cool..but I love Jays!
Sacar...Hello!! Great series....so nice to see a Red-breasted Nuthatch. One of my favorites...but I don't get them every year.
This Northern Flicker was here over the weekend...
ducbucln - Looking at the book I'm guessing it is a Orchard based on the full coloring on te head...
sacarvounis - great series this morning, very nice selection.
dave - nice capture on the bluebird and it appears that you worked out the lighting issues very well. Thanks for sharing.
I hope the snow isn't as bad as predicted for all of you getting the accumulation. I feel guilty complaining about low temps in the high 20's. Maybe my winter visitors will stay a little longer! I'm enjoying the sights.
Nice ones nanny!
I'm green with envy over your Flicker on the feeder.
Sacar, all three of your birds are cute, congrats on the new nuthatch. Cute wp too!
Pelle, that looks like a Christmas card photo. I know what you mean about the bird count! Maybe the birds know that we're going to count them and they're laughing at us. The latest photo of the snow looks bad. I can't even tell which bird is on the top of your feeders. Hope the snow won't break any of those beautiful branches.
Elphaba, you and Sacar are so fortunate to see the beautiful wps.
Dave, love your series with the BBs-these birds are so adorable.
Nanny, great shot of the flicker and dove.
This California Towhee was hinting the holes were about empty and I needed to get out the peanut butter. The birds are so funny when they fly down to the railing and just sit and look at me with that starving look.
From the ID forum, everyone agrees that my mystery bird (about 46 posts ago) is a female House Finch.
Hack
The hawk on the hammock is SOOO COOL! Amazing that you could get such clarity in such low light. I wonder why the hammock doesn't flip him right off?
Dave, really love the bluebird shots especially the last one.
Duc, that towhee shot is gorgeous.
Nanny, I'm so jealous of the flicker. I've seen them here in South Dakota and in California and yet I've never gotten a good photo of one.
jh, that one is spectacular!
Excellent pics jh!
Where in Fla. do you like to go birding?
One of nine waiting for meal worms this afternoon. Unfortunately I had run out completely. This week's shipment is at the FedEx office but the tracking information says "delayed -- circumstances beyond our control." The snow may be gone tonight but it is VERY windy and cold. I turned on the nest cam and I have at least two and maybe as many as four bluebirds sleeping in the nest box tonight. Hard to count them when they are huddled up close like that.
That's such a great shot of your Bluebird Dave! Hope the meal worms come soon!
We are STILL snowing here but it should be moving out soon. Broke all our records for snow totals. It looks like a different world outside.
Here too. I have snow piled higher than my head along both sides of the driveway and along the sidewalk . The snow is much deeper where the plows have pushed it. And the parking lots are unbelievable where they have pushed the snow in piles. You'd think this was Minnesota.
Here's three from yesterday.
I only have two females (and eight males). This is the mother of all but one of them. This afternoon they were all outside the window, waiting and she saw me and flew up to the window and fluttered there like a hummingbird. She actually did it three times. I know they are very hungry. I drove over to the FedEx office at 3 p.m. hoping they would be open but they were closed. Try telling that to a hungry bluebird.
Burd_Fotos - I'm always drawn to the yellow eyes of a Grackle. Good pic
linthicum - you have a lot of very sharp photos, but that 1st one, with the bunches of Cardinals and Blue Jays, is really something. Wow.
gardenpom - that's a nice pic of the Osprey flying over.
ducbucln - those California Quail sure are pretty!
sacarvounis - I've never had the pleasure of seeing a Red-breasted Nuthatch. Neato!
Elphaba - I like the capture of the Cooper's Hawk. Regal looking raptor.
nanny_56 - thanks, I enjoy making the collages - I like posting just one pic instead of three or four of the same bird. Oh, and those Northern Flickers are very photogenic. Nice pics.
2dCousinDave - that was a nice series of the BB taking off. You and your editing program did a good job.
jhowdy - nice pic, but what kind of bird is that that is making the nest?
-------------------------------
I took me a few pics and made a few collages out of them.
Here is one of the same Ruby-crowned Kinglet hopping around feeding.
Hack
Oh Dave I hope their open tomorrow. Do you think they might eat some crumbled suet or chopped fruits?
Nice ones Hack! I always like seeing the Pine Warblers since I rarely see them.
Nice photo's everyone!! Pelle, I agree with the number's and the bird count. lol Starlings, Cowbird's and a flock of about 40 Grackle's ( which landed in my tree but did not feed). I got in the truck to go to work after more shoveling, and a Fox Sparrow showed up, but I had to leave.
I went the combo route this time..
The suet log was the only available spot for Elvis today.

I like just about anywhere up and down the state. I do a lot of my birding from a two person kayak my wife and I have. It get's us to spots normally not accessible. I love getting back up into the mangrove bays of south FL as well as the Everglades, the inland rivers and lakes as well as the coastal flats and hardwood areas in my area here in north FL along the gulf. These Wood Storks are very willing subjects most of the time whether they are feeding, nest building or just standing around. The first picture I should have mentioned is not a landing as it might appear. The stork is actually trying to pull the twig free and is using the his large and powerful wings to pull the twig free. If was a very interesting aerial ballet so to speak.
Dave, hoping the mealies arrive soon, or you might have to open up the pantry for other options!
Here is one of my favorite subjects, an American Oyster Catcher near the mouth of the Suwannee River on, of course, an oyster bed. This was taken last season from our kayak.

A tin of cat food would probably do as an emergency standby until the mealworms arrive!
