I don't have a good picture to post with it but here's the new thread. The dozens of robins have gone back in the woods on this beautiful clear day, not one to be seen. The dozens of birds that were eating nonstop yesterday have slowed down too; maybe others got out to refill their feeders today. My standard fare of safflower and thistle and pure suet draws a standard fare of mourning doves, goldfinches, juncos, white throated sp,downy WP, chickadees, titmice, a few english Sp and house finches. Yesterday the mockingbird, carolina wren and the bluejay came by to say hi. Oh, of course grackles, redwing BBs and few starlings.

#284 new daily pix
They're so pretty in the snow. I have a couple- 3 pairs normally, but yesterday counted a solid dozen males all feeding here.
That last thread ended so quickly that I didn't get to comment on everyones photos-wonderful, all of them!
Sally, thanks for the new start. Sorry your birds aren't cooperating with you. Hope you'll get some photos soon, it sounds like a wonderful variety.
Charlie, your cardinal photos are spectacular as always. That red/orange coloring does pop out in both of them.
We had a mixture of rain and sun yesterday.
Nice photos everyone!
Charlie... glad to see you can still take some gorgeous photos after shoveling all that snow! LOL!
Great job Sally. Thank you!
Lily, Does look like a Red-shouldered Hawk.
Linth, Beautiful Cardinal shots!
Beautiful Junco Duc!
Here's one from last weekend on the Mississippi River in the SE corner of Iowa.. our beautiful national bird.. the Bald Eagle :)
I love Cardinals and Blue Jays.. and Duc, I agree with your favorite picture, that was well done!
Aren't the hawks wonderful? I love looking at them :)

Nice one Clan!!
I love all the raptors!
Nice Goldfinch pics nanny! Wish I saw more here.
GP, I hope they use that one of find another on close by.
I was admiring a huge dead tree near here, fine woodpecker place with holes. A recent storm tore off big hunks of bark and it is MUCH more rotten inside than I would have guessed. I'm curious to see if it survived this snow load. gives me more respect (fear) of dead trees.
That's true sally. We used to have a very tall tree belonging to our neighbor that sat right at our fence. It was obvious that if it ever fell it would come squarely down on our house. We never said anything to the neighbor but it was almost as if he read our minds and had the tree taken down shortly after.
It is sad to see the big ones taken down though. I always wonder what birds might have called it home.
If I had a tree like that, I'd leave the big stump I think. Good for birds and could run vines up it.
yah. flicker.
Agree with Mrs Ed, Northern Flicker.
Cool!!! Thanks for the id.
Sally, thanks for the new thread. Looking forward for some of your pics.
Lily you get the Red Shoulder and I get the Cooper's. Aren't we the good host !!
Linth, It's to bad you ran out of snow, to finish off that snow motel. Think of all the company you would have got. ;)Your Cardinals are so lovely with the snow.
Duc , I agree the third one is awesome.
Nanny, do you think, the color change in the Goldfinch is a sign of an early Spring? I sure wish so. Nice shots.
GP, it's so sad to see a host tree go. Hope you try the box. They're pretty birds.
Flowerjen , nice that you get to see the flicker. I've only seen them twice here, and only for a fleeting moment.
I really think this Cooper's Hawk thought he could fool me, by hidding behind all those branches.
A little Downy up on the branch.
Nice ones burn! Love the fluffy Chickadee.
sallyg - thanks for starting the new thread.
Lily_love - nice pic of the hawk, I still looking for one to photograph.
linthicum - that male Cardinal at your feeder is about as red as I've ever seen - great capture
ducbucln - that second Dark-eyed Junco, your favorite one, should be in a book somewhere.
ClanCampbell - I like the look of your soaring Bald Eagle.
nanny_56 - nice collection of Goldfinches.
gardenpom - your little homeless Red-Bellied Woodpecker is pretty. He'll find a new home.
Mrs_Ed - I'd leave the big stump, too, but would not let any vines grow up it. My family runs a tree service here and vine covered tree often are home of 100's (one I remember may have had 1,000's) of cockroaches. We used our bucket trucks to strip away the vines and, man, you ain't lived until you're joined by a bunches of roaches in the bucket.
burn_2007 - A hungry Chickadee is a familiar sight around my feeders. Nice pic.

I took a few pics today.
Here are a couple of Brown-headed Nuthatches on a feeder. It appears they are trying to check each other out.
After posting, I realized what follows is the wrong pic.

Nice shots Hack!
The male Eastern Towhee's are so handsome!
That huge Oak is so large, it has actually grown through and devoured a chain link fence! It would cost a fortune to get it out, or even grind it down, so I'm sure it will allowed to "come back" as well as it can, so that is good. I'll try and get a picture of it when I can. I'm sure the male Woodpecker is out looking for "For Rent" signs every day, looking for just the perfect home to raise his next brood.
Fewer birds than usual on the feeder over the wkend as it was time for the Mass audubon bird count. High winds & someone told them that this was a counting weekend. Plus for 2nd yr, no goldfinchs. We used to have plenty. Are they staying further north for the winter?
