flowering evergreen climber in the shade

Wheatland, IN

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a flowering evergreen to climb up the trellis on the side of my porch. It's on the north side of the house so doesn't really get any sun. Thanks!!!

oooh those are nice , flowerjen, I was drooling over some of those descriptions! I get zone envy just reading about those. But I think Indiana is zone 5 or 6.

Unfortunately evergreen + flowering + shade tolerant + hardy in your zone is a pretty tall order. Obviously you can't do anything about your zone or the shade, but would you be willing to either give up on flowering or consider deciduous vines instead? Getting rid of either evergreen or flowers would open up some more options for you.

Since you're not a subscriber I'm not sure if you'll be able to see this list that I generated using the Plant Files advanced search, but if you can see it, this lists evergreen vines that like light shade and are hardy in your zone. Most of them are ones that are really grown more for their foliage than for their flowers. Ignore the Gelsemium that shows up here--I don't see why that cultivar would be two zones hardier than all the others so I think it's likely a mistake. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/advanced.php?nn%5B16%5D=15&nn%5B1%5D=0&nn%5B2%5D=0&nn%5B3%5D=9&nn%5B4%5D=3&nn%5B5%5D=0&nn%5B6%5D=0&nn%5B7%5D=0&nn%5B8%5D=2&nn%5B9%5D=0&nn%5B23%5D=0&nn%5B59%5D=0&nn%5B10%5D=0&nn%5B12%5D=0&sname=Plants&Search=Search

Here's the longer list you get if you eliminate the evergreen requirement: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/advanced.php?nn%5B16%5D=15&nn%5B1%5D=0&nn%5B2%5D=0&nn%5B3%5D=9&nn%5B4%5D=3&nn%5B5%5D=0&nn%5B6%5D=0&nn%5B7%5D=0&nn%5B8%5D=0&nn%5B9%5D=0&nn%5B23%5D=0&nn%5B59%5D=0&nn%5B10%5D=0&nn%5B12%5D=0&sname=Plants&Search=Search You still end up with a lot of the not-so-showy flower ones, but you also start to get some types of Clematis and other things that do have very nice flowers.

(I used light shade as the search criteria for both of these searches--if it's heavier shade then that would further cut down the list)
