South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It deters them! LOL
We have ahuge field behind the house, groundhog heaven to be exact. DH uses them for target practice.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Are they tasty?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

hey they are organic grass fed

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I think I'll pass on that recipe, but thanks anyway. ^_^

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They are "free range" so yuppies will like them.

Triad(for a few more, NC(Zone 7a)

I don't want to kill them just find creative ways to deter them. Our dogs help too. I think they are so cute.

Ok, I am braced for the backlash. ~~
O

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me too. Would rather not kill animals if it can be avoided.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That's what I figure. Even if you get rid of one another will appear to take it's place, so just deter as best you can. They are just being what they are so I try to find a way to share the space with all the critters.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Don't eat them!! YUK!
It's hard not to want to shoot them when you can see moving brown 'dirt mounds' scurrying across 15 acres of field headed towards your veggie garden.
Not to mention the unsuspecting holes they leave. Poor DH has his ankle fused and it's doesn't "Rock N' Roll" like it used to. :(

Celeste, dont Brian ever have any good luck..............

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not often, when he's hunting. ^_^

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

If you have a herd of them and they are becoming a danger that's a whole different deal. Nothing worse than walking into a hole you didn't see and wrecking your foot or ankle.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True - that can be very dangerous.

Triad(for a few more, NC(Zone 7a)

One other perk we had was that Don worked for a pest control company and had rat bait, so he dropped some down the holes we found on our land and ever since we have not seen any.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i do not blame brian for going after them - i would go rambo on them as well!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

We have dogs that deter them. Killed a nest of babies a few years back, and that's the only time we've had them. I think they're afraid of the dogs. That's a good thing. I wish the deer felt them same way. I do think they're cute, too, but I just don't want them in my gardens. Pretty much all the critters are cute, but many are a pest.

Odd, links aren't working for me. Anyone else having that problem?

Your right, the dogs do a good job but the one who is the best is now almost 14 years. She can barely see them until they are in the garden already :(

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

sounds like brian does the best job

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, and it brings him enjoyment! LOL he just has to yell "Plug your ears" so I have a warning. ^_^

Thomaston, CT

Have not seen a chuck here in many years---our neighbors had cairn terriers, & they would go down the holes after the chucks. Would love to have hellebores in bloom right now, or anything, but I see no sign of life on the south side where things appear first. This shrub---I think it's buckthorn---was the only colorful plant in our FL rental---they didn't spend much money on landscaping!

That's very pretty. At least it is green and with a touch of color too. Dusting of snow still on the south side here, but the front has melted away. I think if we got a couple warm days there could be a bulb or two poking out again. Soon, it won't be long now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That looks like nandina to me.

Could be---our friends aren't great gardeners, & they are the ones I asked!
