I am planting a square foot garden in North Texas. I am beginning to plan what is going into the garden. Can anyone help with what veggies grow best this tie of year, and when I should plant? Thanks in advance for any help!
Starting a square foot garden, Need help with veggie ideas!
The texas people will be out to help.. I did not even realize texan even has a zone seven.. I looked up and found an area of texas with a zone 6...
here is a chart i use..as well as the farmer's almanac..

I always thought texas was harvesting spring crops now or soon and tomatoes seedlings started...
Either way, these charts are great, I am in zone 6 but frost covers and hoophouses allow me to run a zone ahead...
good luck!

I tried finding a planting guide for Denton Co., but came up empty-handed, so here's one for Tarrant Co. You might want to adjust the dates a tad since you're just a wee bit further north.

Here's a vegetable variety guide for us, too.

You can download both of these to your computer if you've got Adobe Reader.

Contact your local co-operative extension office. They should be able to give you planting information that is specific to your area.
Hey, Sethhayhurst! I use SFG here near Dallas and I love it. Good luck this year!
I've got a book that lists your average last freeze date in Denton as 3/21 (a little more specific than the general 7b last freeze date). Here are the planting dates I have based on this last freeze date for my favorite SFG veggies:
Cool Season Crop:
Sugar Snap Peas - plant seeds - 1/24-3/7
Spinach - plant seeds - 1/24-3/14
Lettuce (Butterhead, Romaine) - plant seeds - 2/7-3/7
Radish - 2/7-4/18
Warm Season Crop:
Green Bean vines (pole beans) - plant seeds - 3/21-4/11
Green Bean bushes - plant seeds - 3/21-4/11
Tomatoes - plant transplants - 3/21-5/16
Peppers (Bell and Jalapeno) - plant transplants - 3/21-5/16
Herbs (Basil, Thyme, Italian Parsley, Cilantro) - plant transplants - 3/21-5/16
I grow the snap peas and pole beans up a simple trellis on the north side of one of my beds and some indeterminate (tall growing) tomatoes up a trellis on the north side of the other bed. It's better to err on the side of caution with tomatoes and peppers if you get to 3/21 and the weather doesn't seem to have warmed up yet, since tomatoes and peppers hate cold. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Heres a great link, you can also go to the map to see what region you are in. I use this all the time. Just remember that every area is a little different ie I'm in region III but many times the temp here is more like region II. Every area has its own micro climate.

I'm also starting SFG this year. I decided to put in a vegetable garden as I was tired of the flavorless store tomatoes and throwing out bagged lettuce becase someone bruised it. I was also fustrated by my local stores rotating through the melons and winter squashes so fast I hardly had time to buy them.
Being a nerd I did what Mel recommended and wrote down a list of what I like. Then I put it all in a spreadsheet and using my local last frost date figured out my inside and outside seeding dates. Of course I was a week late on starting my broccoli ansld parsley but oh well.
Hi there up in Denton! Im doing my first Square Foot Garden this year here in Houston. I grew a few fall veggies in containers because my tiller guy could never coordinate with the rain to come and do the first tilling of my spot. I had great carrots, onions, mezclun, Black Seeded Simpson lettuce and snow peas in pots planted in late September. I have already put into my SFG, radishes, beets, broccoli, chard, brussel sprouts, chives, red lettuce and another crop of mezclun and cucumbers. I got the cucumbers going too early but I have started some more to be ready when it warms up. I will be planting beans of several kinds very soon. I transplanted out my tomatoes yesterday. I am in zone 9a which is about a month ahead of Atlanta TX where my sister lives. She is in 8a. I use the SFG book by Bartholemew and follow what he says about the last frost date and counting backwards from it to know when to start seeds inside and when to transplant, etc. His charts are really helpful. Good luck with your garden and let the rest of us Texans know how you fare with it. I wish you bushels of produce this year. Marty
Just plant what you like to eat.
