new hanging baskets

Atlanta, GA

greetings!

i recently purchased 6 hanging baskets for my front porch. my house (and front porch) faces north, but i have a huge tree in the front yard and the canopy blocks a lot of the light. any idea what kind of flowers i should plant? ...and when i should plant them? ...and should i start them inside and move outdoors later? ideally, i want perennials so i can plant them and they'll return but i want something colorful as well, but annuals would be fine, since i'm falling in love with playing in the dirt.

also--i plan to put two large planters by my front door but there's even less sun up there. ideas? am i too overwhelming?? sorry if i am... it's my first house and last year i didn't plant anything and it looked like no one lived there. this year i want the front porch to be inviting and colorful and look like someone cares so i'm a little pressed. *wink* help!!

oh yeah... i'm in atlanta. i read where that's zone 7.

*grin*

thanks!

Marques, many of the plants in the following links will do well in shade and hanging baskets or planters in your zone.

Hope these are helpful to you.

I always love red geraniums and they seem to like some shade as they are in my greenhouse now after almost dying and have tripled in size from filtered light.

I have some pots with creeping jenny to hanging down the sides, and purple oxalis out front of our shady east facing house. They're both perennial- though the oxalis didn't make it through last (particularly cold) winter- it is 7B, but in previous years it has made it through. Coleus won't make through the winter, but they are so inexpensive and colorful and quick growing.
