Tropical garden #63

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

You and me both Hap...I had no idea, it kept growing bigger and bigger...I was wanting to put something..well..much smaller in the location...so I was happy when it finally towered above my head and I could get around it it. I was going to look for a picture of it, but didn't get very far...couldn't take looking at all the photos from this time last year.

zone 6a, KY

Is that a tropical water lily? I've looked at them, but not up to the winter challenge, even for lovely colors :).

Great lesson on loniloba, and polly. I was reading about all kinds of alocasias and then anthuriums today. It is great to learn, but sometimes I'm better off not knowing of all the beautiful species/hybrids, lol.

rj,

What am I doing wrong with not having a monster here? Other than this month, it has been growing 24/7.

Honestly ...I don't know.. Many of us were surprised at the size. It got lots of light, winter and summer..it is next to my beaumontia murtonii. The area that it is in stays much dryer than the rest of the bed...I use alfalfa pellet fertilizer 3 times a year..that's all I have!

noonamah, Australia

Lin, I have a huge list of " ... someday, in my spare time ...." things, LOL.

3jsmom31, it's one of our locals, but the less common colour variation. There's a pure white, and variations of blue/purple, Nymphaea violacea.

Sometimes, when it comes to all the controversy about names, it's easier not to worry what something is and just enjoy it.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks, rj. Really have to try those pellets.

Got to see what alive first. LOL

Oh that flower bloom is beautiful!
I have fallen in love with tropicals... As long as I can keep them alive I am happy, and so far I havn't lost alot that I have adopted or has been given to me except a few things..
and that was because I over watered.. sugar cane, Naughty Nick brug, mother of thousands, and my rangoon creeper.. ( That one froze cuz I didn't know any better)
Dog treats are easy as biscuits..
any meat carcass except fish ( unless you have a cat) boil until rendered to nothing but bare bones.. blend the grissle and renderings in a blender, add some peas or green beans and carrots, blend again, add to a bowl of about three cups of self rising flour, stir until a soft ball, refrigerate, take out what you want, add regular flour ( I use whole wheat but some dogs may be allergic to this) roll out in one inch rolls, you can roll flat and cut with a cookie cutter or cut into tiny pieces with a knife, put on a baking sheet, bake at 350 untill brown, shake em over, bake some more until hard.. let cool store in a covered plastic container or a zip lock baggie.. you can add bacon grease if you want.. no food coloring or salt. I am making more but using corn instead of peas. My Duke Dog is not picky. He has had Ham, Smoked Turkey, Baked chicken and Bacon flavored. He loves them all and it only takes about twenty minutes to put the dough together. When DH isn't watching sometimes I add cheese. LOL
Here is part of the Garden tonight..

LOL, can you post the "Doggie Treats" recipe over here on the forum where we were discussing Dave & family's new dog? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1072128/

holy cow, dave!!! Beautiful cloud pics. I love plants, but your clouds are really glowing :)....

How often does it rain in Hawaii (just on average)? And do you have a even temp year round or variation?

Keaau, HI

More than 200 inches of rain per year.

Is it everyday more or less, or wet/dry season, and what about breezy? And warm or hot? :)

My cloudy pond. This is the biggest water lily I've seen (Nymphaea 'Attraction'). The leaves are like a horses cheek (rear one, LOL) and it flowers 20 to 40 at a time... I'll have to get a pic when it's showing out.

Tremendous picture's everyone. Keep them coming;-)

We are getting ready for another winter storm here, but the other day was just great. Out in a t-shirt and looking around. Found cyclamen leaves, don't recall which one, but it's pretty anyway, lol.

Thumbnail by 3jsmom31

Lucky you Dawn. I do not have any of the hardy Cyclamen plant's but I do admire the foliage on them vs. the bloom;-)

Dave, do you have any more photo's from Onomea coast to share?

Here you go Rachel!

I shudder at even the sound of the word Syngonium. It's all through my place, you can't get rid of it once it gets in. Cut away its contact with the ground and it'll still live quite happily spreading through the tree tops.

Keaau, HI

Quite strikingly different from the juvenile that everyone loves!

Now my sygs are almost gonners, but before our 'winter' came, they were looking poorly. Wish I had taken a closer pix, but can you see enough? This entire patch was beautiful and vibrant and then all at once it got the creeping crud.

Gorgeous pictures from Hawai'i -ahhhh... dreaming here....

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

You're right Hetty, I should have mentioned that. But all Dave's pictures are beauties.

(Zone 1)

Good Morning everyone!

Yes ... Dave has us all dreaming of Hawaii with his photo's ... and Tropic has us dreaming of Australia with his. With this unusually cold winter we've been having I need a vacation to someplace warm! It was 39ºF here again last night. The landscape still looks crummy and I can't wait for March and a warm up. After a winter like this one I will never complain about heat and high humidity in summer again, LOL. Yeah, Yeah ... I know I say that now, but by July I will probably be complaining about the humidity! ^_^

Love those Alexander Palms Dave ... and that Philo growing all over and up that tree is amazing!

3jsmom: How fortunate that you can grow Cyclamen in the ground in your area! We see if for sale as temporary plants to enjoy around the holidays down here in Florida.

Since our landscape looks so crappy I've begun taking pic's of the birds. This is a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker clinging to a branch of the Sugarberry Tree yesterday afternoon.

Lin, I don't think the florist cyclamen would survive here (not sure), it is a hardy type that I have. I wanted to ask if it's taboo when I post photos of hardy perennials on this thread? I won't get carried away if it is ok.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

ditto what lin said about being able to grow cyclamen inground. I spend good money on them but I've also noticed that this year they were about 20% cheaper than in previous years. Hopefully it is a continuing trend. I don't know if mine are florist type, I got them at WM. In fact, I have bought 2 batches this winter. The first batch was decimated by the infamous Dec 2009 frost and I just finished planting my 2nd batch. Just needed a little color among all the brown that surrounds me.

I love syngoniums but yes, have to be grown in pots or will take over. here's a pic of one of mine, growing as a houseplant. very undemanding. I love red and I collect plants w/ red flowers, leaves, berries, veining, whatever is red.

I'm enjoying all the pics but especially Metrosideros' ones showing the gray skies. I look up and pretend it is molten silver and shaping up into things. Who else does weird things like that?

The TX star hibbie growing in the basement looks much happier than ones I've seen growing outdoors here in TX.
