I live in San Diego county and have some Gaillardia "Oranges and Lemons" that I planted in pots in May "09. They have been blooming non-stop since. I have been regularly dead-heading and feeding them and they just keep going and going. However, they are starting to have a build-up of old stems that the new blooms have been coming from and the plants are starting to look like they need refreshing. Should I sacrifice my winter blooms and cut them back hard? If so, how far down should I take them? I would hate to take them down so far they won't recover. Or, should I just let them keep blooming their hearts out and replace them when they have spent themselves? I would hate to not be able to find more as our garden centers here are not very consistent in what they carry and can't be depended upon to have the variety I want.

Matties_Mom....a little info for you. Most info recommends you cut the plant back in late summer to about 3 inches from the ground. At this point, you may want to let them finish blooming and then cut them back for spring.

I had a similar question a while back; here's the thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1033516/
While it's division, you can insure still having them w/out worrying about what the stores are carrying.
