Apropos of Nothing v.7

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1065010/

This thread can't be derailed because there's no topic. HA!

Sorry I wasn't around for a few days. Just doing my dinking around on facebook instead of here lately.

I got a new pet yesterday- say hello to Beetlejuice!

Thumbnail by the1pony

Ah, he is very pretty! And I'm sure he displays nicely with his lovely fins.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

He is a pretty boy. And quite active. The cats are fascinated. They think I got them a kitty color TV.

(No worries, the little tank has a snug-fitting cover.)

Ah, he is in one of those little tanks? How come no friends in a larger tank? I know he is territorial, but he can still have territory. In case you didn't know.... Beta splendens. I did a pitiful research project on their behavior as an undergrad. I still remember the latin name for this fish. It's been taking up room in my brain, so now it's out and you can have it.

Thanks for the advice on dishwasher shopping. I’ve got a cold and the plumber’s truck broke down yesterday, so things are on hold right now. It’ll be a while before he gets to the kitchen. Drawers sound good.

Glad the owies are better. I took note of the remedies too. I put my pruners in the my pocket too and now have holie pockets!!

News from Haiti is awful. I went through there maybe 15 yrs ago, just at the airport changing planes. Our work crew had been waiting for three days to get out, big hurricane had damaged the airports at our usual stops, can’t remember right now which one it was, cold is fogging my head. I remember landing and seeing a band playing on the tarmac, homemade instruments. And the colors!!! Bright colors everywhere!! They ushered us into the gift store to wait for the plane and this little man kept following me around wanting to shine my shoes. I was wearing tennis!!

The stories coming out are so sad.

Pony you need to get a mirror and put it in front of your Beta. I love the way they 'poof up'.
Yes we are a fortunate country to have an infrastructure that can assist when natural disasters occur. Fortunately the weather is warm for sleeping outside.

Pix, I can't afford a bigger tank with friends. I also don't have a place to put a bigger tank. *shrug*

Free Willy!

Saw a drawn plan for my new greenhouse yesterday and approved all the plans. He will start in a week when he gets back from Hawaii. I am so excited. We also finished cleaning the attic. It looks amazing. Picture later

You are so lucky Willow. A GH in the Pac NW is a truly good idea. Not here in Montucky. This is what it would look like entering my GH in winter. LOL

LOL It looks just like that here about once a year. My shed will be more shed than greenhouse. If you would like to see where I got the basic idea, go to seattlesheds.com and find the 'sunhouse'. My door will be on the back side and will have different materials. No water but it will have ventilation and lights.

Ww2 would love to see pics as you go of your greenhouse. I want to live vicariously... not in the plans here for a bit yet as we're working on the riding arena. I'm expecting that to take all my extra funds for quite awhile into the future:((

You will love having it!
Apropos of nothing, I have to go buy some flystrips. My greenhouse has been taken over by flies that look similar to houseflies, but a bit smaller. They are everywhere! My carnivorous plants cannot keep up. I'm going to hang those disgusting flystrips.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Pix, you may find that those are a very brief flush ... I had them in the house last week, then they vanished.

"I too have bulbs that still need planting, and don't even have the excuse of having "lost" them."

Mine are in my car. I got about 200 planted around the yard but then my shopping outweighed my ambition.

I should put them in the fridge out back so they will stay cold until spring. At this rate they will be the only ones. It has been cool and rainy here for weeks, as opposed to cold and snowy like usual. I am worried my tulips will come up in time to get snow dumped all over them :(

What a great idea, Patricia. Are you going to save a lot, having this guy build it for you?

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

NO. It is more expensive than I thought but will have much better materials and I know him and his methods. I will take pictures as it rises from the gravel.

Can't wait to see Willow. How fun is that going to be? I'm thinking of building a kind of cold frame box this summer. Something I can use to winter some things that need protection from frost. My neighbor has one that would work great for my needs. And of course she doesn't use it. Hahaha! Wish I could have a green house but not in the budget right now. But I think if I can find some of the things at the recycle I'll be able to do a good box.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I think it's a great design. And, being better built, maybe you'll be able to work out there comfortably on miserable fall and spring days.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I had a 10x20' greenhouse one house ago & practically lived out there. Even if it's not usable year-round, it lengthens the season by so much. I used a floor of wood chips, so it always smelled fantastic.

It was technically "portable," but after it took 3 of us 3 days to put together, it was NOT going to be taken down & put up again.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I love it willow I am thinking of making it a chicken house and giving them the smell of straw and pine rather than cedar though.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Sofer, could you build yours in a pit to offer further height & insulation?

For anyone who's not familiar with her ideas, I highly recommend Anna Edey's book, "Solviva." It features the mother of all greenhouses.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

My chickens are not Foghorn Leghorn! They want solar heated rocks.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

My favorite niece, Janna, called me out of the blue tonight. She was my joyful, constant companion during the grind of a drive out here but we hadn't spoken since, though I talk to her parents all the time.

For more than an hour, we talked movies, friend troubles, school plans, hair color, her plans to combine a veterinary practice with a homeless shelter, Wii diplomacy and the household jubilation over my upcoming visit.

I'm sure it would have been wonderful to be a parent. But is there any more precious pleasure than that of being an adored, glamorous aunt to a 14-year-old?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Been there. And no, there's not. :-)

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

The floor in my shed will be pathway gravel. It packs into an unmoving firmness and of course will drain well. A new type of roofing and a new type of translucent material for the greenhouse window. Should look spiffy. Right now I have tools in the cart shed, potting bench area, garage and what we call the pump room because the pump for the jacuzzi is in there. Hope to get everything I need in the new one and be able to put the wheelbarrow in there in the wintertime.

Willow how exciting! I do wish I had room for a greenhouse. Some day I will convert my 1905 "garage" to a GH/shed. Must save my pennies for that!

Pretty fish Pony!

There are days (though not many) when I would trade places with you to be the "adored aunt" of a 14 yo girl as opposed to the PARENT!! Some days I wish they were all boys, so much easier to manage. Thankfully there are horses, dogs, cats and plenty of plants that need attention too.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Pony, your fish is gorgeous!

Willow, I can just imagine how excited you must be! I can't wait to see the final product!

As I won't have the joy (or frustration) of being the mother of a teenage girl, I hope to one day fit the "adored aunt" role! My neice is very shy, and I don't get to see a lot of her due to busy lives in opposite directions of my household and my brothers, but we hope that changes when their kids get a bit older.

Ladybugg, have faith! The teenage years are rough for mothers and daughters (living proof!!) but it all works out in the end when the hormones settle down and the young person figures out that they don't truely know everything! (I honestly wish I knew as much now as I was sure I did when I was 16 and 17!)

Hey, did you guys see that MichaelZ had an accident and died last weekend? Dea from Maryland started a thread in this forum.

He was only 57 and it was a freak accident. RIP, Michael.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Just crazy, and kinda creepy too. What an awful thing to happen....

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Yeah. And troubling for me, I think, because I live alone as he did. I mean, if somebody had been there, they could have called the fire department and gotten him out. But because nobody missed him right away, nobody knew he was in there.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Ok who is Michael Z? And what happened? I am in AK and have no TV.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

He has posted in our forum before several times, though not often. He lived in Portland. Check out the thread on vegetable gardening.

Apparently sometime last weekend, probably Friday, he walked out into his back yard and an abandoned cistern opened up (top rotted?) and he fell in. He survived the fall, but died of drowning/hypothermia. He was 57.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Bummer that is too sad!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I read that article, and wondered how he would have fallen out of his shoes as they suggest. I think maybe he was calling for help and threw his shoes up out of the cistern to try to get someone's attention. That would have been one of few options he had to attract notice. Although maybe he was down too deep for that to be what really happened, the thought popped into my mind.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Holly, I had the same thought. Kathy, I agree that it is a scary thought when you either live or garden alone, or have loved ones that do. Makes you want to have one of the "I've fallen and can't get up" buttons that my grandma does, even when you are not elderly. I do think that it will make me think about carrying my cell phone in my garden pants along with my camera. After all, it couldn't hurt.....

Again, what a very very sad thing.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I broke my leg out hunting about 8 years ago and had to set it and get my truck out of a deep hole. After I broke my leg I had to carry rocks for 2 hours to lift the rear end. Boy did I wish I had a phone with me. I found 2 Advil on the floor to my truck to help with the pain. I had to push my clutch with my broken leg and ouch! I drove to the hospital on my own and when going there there was a bad head on car wreck. When I got to the hospital being covered with blood from the buck I hauled on my sholders to my truck they shrieked that "I had driven to the hospital on my own". I told them that the blood wasn't mine and they calmed down. I was lucky poor Michael.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

OMG, Steve, that is scary!!! I'm really glad you made it to the hospital in one piece. You are a man of incredible fortitude, that's for sure.

My dad had one of those lifeline buttons to summon help because he had ALS (Lou Gherig's disease) and was becoming increasingly incapacitated. My mother kept it after he died because she is living alone and began having occasional dizzy spells. It really gives us all peace of mind to know she has it.
