Good Mail Order Suppliers

(Zone 8a)

I am trying to find a reputable supplier for my spring vegetable garden. I checked the top watchdog suppliers and only a couple supply vegetable seeds and they supply them by the 1/4 pound. This is just too much for my garden. Please help me find a site that offers quality vegetable and fruit seeds.

Thanks!

There are tons of companies that aren't in the top suppliers list that are still perfectly good--sometimes they just don't have a high enough # of total comments to make the list, or they're very good but just slightly more negatives than someone that made the list. I've bought from plenty of companies that have good ratings but aren't in the top supplier list and they've been just fine.

You can search the Watchdog by category (scroll down the main page and just below the most recent comments section you'll find a section that says "browse by category"). Once you choose a category (such as vegetable seeds), you'll get a page listing all the companies and on that page there's an option to sort by rating so that the companies with the best ratings. I did it for you here on vegetable seeds: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/advanced.php?search_text=&cat%5B158%5D=29&cat%5B157%5D=&state=xx&country=XX&sorter=rating&submit=Search I bet you'll find someone in that list who has a good rating and the type of seeds you're looking for.

Baker Creek - http://rareseeds.com/ is the only place I buy veggie seed.

I am with you on the top watchdog suppliers that list is really meaningless to me, they are just the most popular and often cost more than other great places to buy from from my personal experience. So I skip the watchdog when I can and find people who garden like me and find where they buy their plants and seed. That said from time to time it can be a good jumping off point.

Choosing the right mail order company can be a problem. I just did an article on seed catalogues focuing mostly on seed prices - see http://www.morssglobalfinance.com/which-seed-catalogue-to-use/.

Hope you find it useful!

Lexus - you might want to check out Pinetree Seeds, I've ordered from them for years without a problem, their packets contain less seeds than many other companies and the price is comparably lower. I like this fact because it lets me try more varieties than I would if buying seeds in larger quantities. Also keep in mind that most types of seed will keep for at least a year or two if you keep it dry and cool.

Their website is www.superseeds.com

As far as seed goes I've tried them all (comparatively speaking) and find that they all do well. However, that said, you may have to order from several companies if you're looking for specific varieties; also price is an issue and of course the shipping charges. If however you're ordering plants then that's a whole other issue and you definitely have to go with the more reputable companies. As far as seed goes I"ve done well with Thompson & MOrgan, Parks, Burpees, and Johnny's but shipping and handling costs are getting to be too much so I now buy vegetable seed at my local stores which have displays from the above mentioned companies.

I usually get my seeds from Pinetree seeds,as stated above. I think they have the best shipping prices also.
