nice Karen.. you know I love the begonias... when i overwintered my brug all the leaves fell off... good for you!!!
I had wanted a Escargo Begonia ever since I saw my GF's so a few months later I saw one and bought it. It didnt live very long.I whined to her about that and she told me hers died a month after I saw it.
Just bad luck with that plant here.
tiny beautiful flower for that big ole post
:)
Allison, I had just a few leaves fall off that brug when I first brought it in. I got it at a plant auction put on by our garden club here. It was from a cutting done by one of our members. It's a pink one. I can't wait to see it in bloom. I think I'm going to soon be putting it in a bigger pot.
Gorgeous, Phoebe!
JoAnn, I have not tried the one called Escargot. I would love to get more begonias. They do like a lot of humidity, so rather than use a humidifier, I put the pots in trays with pebbles and keep water in the trays to create extra humidity around the immediate area around the pots. Misting helps, too, and I did it for awhile, but have stopped doing that some time ago. I'm hoping my begonias will get bigger now that I've put them in bigger pots.

I read that old tubers are old tubers.. don't know about the rex ones though... but I know the tuberous the old tuber after a while will be a dud... and best to take cuttings of it and make new ones.. not sure if you call them canes that grow from them.. but the canes got huge and didn't flower much.. took cuttings and flowered beautifully.. not sure if the rex are the same though
I love Begonias, even though I don't understand them. They are my favorite plant to use in my shade containers outside. I bring a few of my potted ones in at the end of the summer and basically just water them now and then. Some do ok, others stuggle. I basically just need them to survive until the late Spring, when I can put them back outside. I have one that's blooming now- can't remember if it's called black mambo or dark mambo, but it's doing well. I'll try to take a pic of it tomorrow.
I'd like to see a pic of it, Noreaster.
Rex begonias do like a lot of humidity, and I'm sure mine don't get as much as they would like, but they seem to do well in spite of that fact. In the winter they can tend to go dormant, losing many, if not all, of their leaves, but new ones will emerge in the spring. The soil should be allowed to almost dry out between waterings, even more so in the winter. They have a shallow root system and don't need deep pots. They should not get direct, hot sun. Morning sun is fine. I just found out that misting can cause spotting on the leaves, so it's not recommended. Guess it's good I stopped doing that. My houseplants sometimes have to be wilting before I water them, poor things, so it's amazing that my begonias have done so well.

nice JoAnn
Phoebe those are beautiful blooms!!
Ge, that begonia is loaded!!
Its been blooming for months now.Makes a mess tho.Spent blooms drop off onto the floor.
yeah they can do that
Here is Dark Mambo. It's a couple years old and I don't do anything except give it a little water now and then....I do keep the soil on the dry side. Guess I should fertilize it? I have another Begonia that is just barely hanging on...hoping it's just in that semi dormant state that you mentioned, Karen. It's right next to this one on the shelf. Another favorite Begonia of mine is Sinbad, but that one does not overwinter well as a houseplant for me...it lived, but I had lots of mildew on the leaves. I have a hard time finding anything other than the common bedding Begonias here, so I always get excited when I find an interesting one for sale at a nursery. I had a gorgeous one a few years ago that I didn't bring in for the winter, but tried to bring a cutting in instead....well, that didn't work, and I so regret losing that one. I haven't seen it anywhere since then. :(
Like that!
That Lily Pad begonia is cool, JoAnn.
Noreaster, I love Dark Mambo. I would love to have one of those.
Karen

Tuberous too?
Phoebe, thanks for the link to that begonia seller's store on ebay. Nice prices. I might have to get some when I get more money. I bookmarked that one. I wish they had pics of the mature plants, though. sometimes the young ones don't look as nice as they would when mature.
Karen
Vendor's name is Karin--she is happy to answer any questions--very nice person.
Interesting. I have only seen those in light shades of blue or violet.
Here's tuberous Victor. The seller is well known and accomplished hybridizer in AV/Gesneriad circles...Guess he grows other plants also. But check out the prices before you fall in love with anything! LOL! Don't know why they are so high, but this is a well respected grower and vendor, so there must be a reason...

Thanks!
morning everyone.
short tho it may be
Yes---going off the air in a few minutes!
no, no not until 1 o'clock our time.
The green areas are getting bigger,Snow is going.
Ours was gone except for a few spots (like our siberian iris bed) & a coating this morning. I know that will go pretty fast but it is annoying.
I'm liking your panoramas, JoAnn. Very nice! I have taken pics to do that with, and I have a photo program that will do that, but I have just never gotten around to doing it.
Marilyn, begonias indoors need only indirect light. The don't like too much light, and not directly on them, except for some morning light. I have one of mine in an east window and it does well there.
Karen
My program came with the camera.I am not always pleased with the panoramas. I think I will have to shoot a series with the program in mind.
The camera has to be at the same level and at a 45* angle in order to have a smooth border.
I have tried to panoramam picks I already have and they didnt turn out as well. I did do one odf the shade garden from last year.
I was thinking a tripod would be best to play around with that
I see what you mean, JoAnn. Yeah, Allison, a tripod would probably be great for that. I have one, but there's a piece missing, so it's not so great. I need a new one.
Karen
