Sports Talk!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Since we've heard some complaints about sports talk on the coffee break thread, I've been meaning to start a dedicated sports thread. Sports appreciative women are certainly welcome!

What a wild Packers game! As the former NY local news sportscaster would say, you could have had 'under 95' and still lost!

I think NO and Dallas will won. Baltimore has a shot, but I think the Colts will prevail. Not too sure about the Jets.

Well this may not be a good idea Victor with that very ugly game yesterday for the Pats, but at least it means a better draft pick. LOL. The pro sports around here are metza metza this year, but you never know until the end. Injuries are such a factor with all the pro teams now. Baseball is still in the hot stove stage but pitchers and catchers and spring training are not far off. Yeah! Also the winter olympics are starting up soon as well. I always enjoy watching that. Good luck to the Jets, okay I really don't mean it but you know. LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee - thanks, Pat.

Being a Jets fan for so long the term 'When hell freezes over' comes to mind at times like this, but have you checked the weather lately?!! ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Does everyone plan to watch the Olympics next month? I will tune in. I used to watch all the coverage religiously. Not any more. Although I prefer the summer events, I like the winter for its lack of real overpaid professionals. More commitment involved. Less notoriety. Those ski jumpers always amazed me.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I can't watch the ski jumping without thinking of the "agony" shot from the old wide world of sports. No one has done coverage of the olympics as well since they always did it. I can't believe how far they fly now. Also like the skating and ski races. And the bowling ball on broom swept ice. LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - the Wide World shot is a classic. Curling is so funny! I remember they joked about Felix liking it on the Odd Couple because it involved sweeping.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i hope your right about the cowboys victor - i know the decibel level will be high here

and i want the jets to keep gong just to hear what comes out of your coaches mouth:)

patti i really think the sox have the best team on paper in baseball right now - the celtics will figure it out - bruins are going nowhere - and belichick is a jerk - not a pats fan here - watched his post game "interview" yesterday just pathetic

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

25 more days till Daytona racing. Woo hoo!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

McGwire finally admitted taking roids.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

he actually admitted it when he was playing - of course it was a "legal" roid that has since been banned

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That was creatine and andro. I think he's admitting to more now. Also reported that he used growth hormone. No surprise.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I like the winter Olympics better, and the skiiers are amazing. We were in BC a few years ago and saw the trail used for one of the events, I thought about going down it, but it was too steep for me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The downhill is thrilling. Slalom is kind of boring. GS is so-so.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I like the figure skating.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me too. And speed skating. And hockey.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

They never show hockey on regular tv.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You mean NHL? ABC is showing some games.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I ski, and as I get older, I go slower, so am amazed at the speed.
One wrong move or rut and who knows what will happen.
A few years ago where we ski, a teacher out with a school ski club was killed on an easy beginner slope because he got hit by a snow boarder and went into a tree.
We'll go Friday for the first time this season, so I should go shopping for a helmet before then.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - terrible. Scary. The injuries can be pretty horrific too.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

No the hockey in the Olympics.

Coverage past years of the Olympics on regular tv has been lame.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

McGwire has done the typical, weaselly thing. Non-apology apology. He only did it because of the injuries - not to improve performance. Yeah. If there were drug testing, we would not be having this conversation. Yeah. It did not help him hit the ball further. Yeah. How stupid do they think people are?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

he was on the roids from the first day in the major leagues

interesting the boston globe had a story about what a jerk belichick was on sunday after the game - and how a day later it is a better experience

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

He's always a jerk.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't think McGwire was on roids when he first came up - he was stick-thin!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

when he was with the A's with canseco he was on roids - his arms and chest were abbienormal - the weight gain came with age and continued use of roids

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - he started it with the A's, but not immediately.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i think he hit 49 his rookie year - when no one had come close to that in a decade - enough said

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

what a memory - http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcgwima01.shtml?redir

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And did not hit 40 again for five years! Defective roids??

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

pitchers being more careful with him

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And they weren't all those years when he hit 50 or more??

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Trying to forget the Pats inglorious season. Well, at least we still have the best team in the NE (and the entire country!), the UConn lady Huskies.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No argument there, Don!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

i like the olympics-both summer and winter. I'm glad I get a candian channel, they cover it so much better. I wish ABC would do it again, they did it the best.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I liked ABC better too. I can't stand Bob Costas.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I prefer the winter olympcs too, especially the skiers and scate, after all I am Austrian where I learned both sports
Maria

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

We are having serious snow issues for the Olympics :( Everyone please send there snow to Vancouver/Whistler. ps since this is a sports thread do we get to drink beer and burp and grunt alot?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes we do.

Are you saying we cannot rely on Canada to produce snow in winter?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Are you going to any of the events, Dnut?

Is this the first time there's a snow problem?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Vancouver BC suffers from being on the rain side of the big rocks. PNW doesn't get snow in winter; it gets monsoons as Katy and Redchic (miss her) will attest. Calgary is better for winter Olympics and actually the US and CA speedskaters and ski jumpers continue to train here since we built the facilities for the 88 Olympics. (ok sorry sounds like I'm bragging) In gardenspeak they are zone 7 although the ski slopes are much higher in elevation but subject to death cookies from the humidity. Not good for winter in Feb. I'm rooting them on though ^_^ Flowerjen I'm SO not good with crowds so no we are not going although my fam lives there. ps I'm having a wine so (hic) not (burp). pss DH says 'Ya! about the sports thread (burp).
