Help me plan my basket!

Folsom, CA

hi,
i bought 3 lovely planters today which i plan to hang from my balcony. This is the first time i plan to grow flower basket & have been spending few $$$ lately preparing for spring/summer. Pls help me decide what to plant in them so that my balcony on 3rd floor looks lovely from road. Also let me know the soil type required - i am confused between Potting soil & potting mix. I live in zone 9( zone14 according to sunset magzine) - north california(sacramento : temperature daytime in January will be 55'F and nite: 40's while in summers (june-july) it touches 90's.
The planters will get sun only after noon 1:00 pm.
thanks

Because your baskets will get the afternoon sun, and bright light the rest of the time, you can use any plant that says full to part sun. You didn't say if you wanted perennials or annuals or a combination of the two. Some ideas for trailing plants would include Prostrate Rosemary http://www.doityourself.com/stry/different-rosemary-varieties ,

licorice plant, http://home.howstuffworks.com/licorice-plant.htm ,

trailing verbena, http://www.humeseeds.com/ef_hb.htm
Any of the sun coleuses would give you great color

Here is one of my favorite sites for coming up with container combos

Now, don't think you have to buy their flowers, just the same type of flowers. All the work and figuring is done for you. Just have a look around the site. You can put in your season, pot style, pot size, etc...or just scroll down and have a look around (that's what I like to do). I guarantee you'll find something to suite you!

Ok, the difference between Potting Soil and Potting Mix is an excellent question. One I had to look up to answer correctly. I knew the answer, but had to rely on others to word it right, lol. Potting Soil is dirt...think of anything with the word "soil" on the bag as plain old dirt. Potting Mix is a soilless mixture made for containers. You would use Potting Soil more for something like a raised bed, NOT a container. If you used Potting Soil in a container it would turn to mud the first time you watered it and it would crush the roots of your plant. Potting Mix may be a little more expensive, but it's worth it.

Potting Soil is dirt...mud, mostly I think it's made out of reed moss. Potting Mix is larger particles...made from Sphagnum Peat Moss, Pearlite and other things to balance out the pH and help your plants do well, some also contain fertilizers and capsules that hold water (Miracle Gro type mixes). That's the kind of thing you want.

Good question! And I bet you thought it was silly, didn't you? MG (miracle gro) potting mix is a good way to go, but you can add ferts (fertilizers) of any kind to it whenever you'd like to. Don't be afraid to do that for potted/container plants.

Basically remember the rule of Thriller, Filler, Spiller. You want something tall (Thriller), something to fill up the container (filler) and something to fall over the edge (spiller). Make sure you have enough to fill out the basket to make it look nice and full. Make sure it meets the lighting requirements. Make sure all the plants have the same watering/ferts needs and you're in business!
