January blooms

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Lin, if anything happens to that AV, then you and I will need to have a little talk! ^_^

(Zone 1)

ROFLMBO Nichole! If this one kicks the bucket, something is Really, Really wrong with me and I I will need more than a talking to! ^_^

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Phoebe,
The only suggestion I have is that trailers need more food, because they have multiple crowns.Your plants look great compared to mine, lately!!

Bonnie,
I am having the opposite problem!! My Streps. were lush and blooming in the summer and now many are pitiful.I lost a bunch, but with Jim's help I figured out they got too wet or too fertilized when I tried matting.

I have had similar problems as Phoebe with some of my AVs.I just finished putting about 60 babies on wicks again, but using a #18 cord, instead of #24.I also lightened the mix a little more.

Lin,
If you kill that AV I will be talking to you also LOL.But your other plants are always gorgeous!!

(tish) near Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I have trail-along too and just love it. The bloom is so different from my other plants. You have a nice big plant...that means it has more roots and more leaves..it needs more fertilizer than a single violet. Don't over do it, just a little more and see if that helps the blooming. Also repotting and or leaching the soil so the extras in the fertilizer don't build up in the soil is a good idea too.

tish

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

According to some AVSA magazine articles, wick watered plants may need less fertilizer to bloom . . .

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

I've learned something new today- that trailers require more fert. than single crowned avs. Great! This will be helpful once I get some plants from these leaves!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hee,hee Lin, I think the only way you could kill that AV is to drop it and step on it ^_^

mrsbonnie,is there ANY streps that will take some heat? That's a major problem in the summer for me.

(Zone 1)

I really think the reason I couldn't keep Strep's alive is because they stayed too wet. Someone told me they wouldn't live in Florida because of the heat but mine weren't outside in the heat. Our air conditioning runs 11 months of the year and the house temp stays a constant 72º in winter and 74º in summer. If the temp inside drops and the heat kicks on it still keeps the house at 72º. The very first Strep I had lived for more than a year and did fine sitting in a windowsill, blooming on occasion. Then as I acquired others, and someone suggested wicking, I put them all on wicks. I have always used a fast draining mix with lots of perlite but they didn't seem to like the consistently wet soil. When I try one or two again I don't think I will wick them.

LOL Jan, Since it doesn't require water, fertilizer or repotting, it won't be moved much so there's no chance of me dropping it and stepping on it, which is good because I am a clutz and always dropping and breaking things! She looks so pretty on my kitchen windowsill with the morning sunlight shining on her! ^_^

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

GrowHappy - that may be true for most . . . but I give all my plants the exact same amount of fert, and my trailers bloom just fine. Did you see the picture of my trailer from the state show back in november? How much fert are you using?

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

the only streps i know that will tolerate a little more heat are the crystal series from dibley's & liliputana, her you can hardly ever find, i had several & gave alot away & then lost my own.

Nichole,

I'm using 1/8 or less of tsp. per half gallon of water. All my streps and standard AVs are blooming like crazy. AVs are wicked, but not the majority of my streps. When my trailers are of size, I'll use what I'm using now and see what happens. If they don't bloom well, I'll up the dose.

Thanks!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Be careful upping the dose--I've gotten in trouble a couple of times by unwittingly using too much fertilizer--better too have too few blooms than bunched leaves. Then you have to go through the whole process of elimination diagnosis thing--ugh!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Good point Phoebe!! Thank you....

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Lynn,
Will take computer out to kitchen to see if any of that plant I sent is blooming here... They are all doubles of what I have so unless I croaked it, it should be here. My streps use to be Diva's but I put them to the curb and told them to grow up.... They are doing much better now... They are just country streps now...LOL No Prima's hereLOL Ok trying to go to bed now...
Hugs to all,
Susan

I did research when I had to write an article on trailing violets for our av club program. Several sources said a little more fertilizer, but if less is working I would not change anything that already works. Also just because you use a little more fertilizer, doesn't mean you have to use more every time you water.

I've been using 1/8th tea also on my plants for awhile now, it is less than is recommended but is working for me. The only time I use a little more is on plants that were not blooming.

Thanks, but I hadn't realized you were so sick, I'm sorry ! I am interested in seeing how you grow plants, but I can wait until you feel way better! tish

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Susan, yes, I have one blooming right now that I've been trying to identify. I think I'm close: maybe Fernwood's Cherry Jubilee. Another one had buds now. It' sgoing to be a maroon color- can't wait to see the center!
The one above isn't from you though. Here is the one from you that is blooming now:

Fire and Ice is correct.. It may very well be Cherry Jubille as I did have that one but I killed it...LOL So maybe down the road we could swap a leaf or two....
Tish, Is ok about me being sick... I just hate being that way.... Ok here is what I grew leaves in and then started sending to people on the forum... I am hoping to see a few more blooms here soon.... So down the road if any of you want a baby or two let me know...These are all doubles of what I have... Or did have...LOL Ok here are the babies...

Sue, what mix do you put your strep leaves in? Also, did you drill holes in the bottom of the container? I'm looking for a new medium to root my future strep leaves in. Plain perlite produces less rotted leaves, but also takes to long for babies to get big!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I can't grow in just perlite... I kill all of the leaves that way... I got the box from walmart and it is called a sweater box. I drilled a ton of holes in the bottom and used the top under it to catch any water when they got bigger... Not tonight as I am in bed typing but after work tomorrow I will show you a baby box as I call it with young leaves in it... I use pro mix soil and perlite... I just add the prelite until it seem that there is enough...This is also what I grow my plants in... I cover the top with saran wrap and leave alone... That was the hardest part for me when I first tried to grow leaves... I over watered them... Now I don't look at them...LOL I am not the best person to say what my brain wants my fingers to type...LOL
I did take pictures of some of my blooms tonight but have not re sized them yet... Grand kids came over for awhile...LOL
Ok going to try and resize a few picture now... I hope you could understand me about the box...LOL brain dead I am...
Hugs,
Susan

OMG! Susan, your plants are beautiful! Emily is very nice!
Let's compare notes in the Spring! LOL

How far is Danville from Baltimore? I was looking for it this weekend when I went home to North Carolina. I didn't see any exit signs for it though, off 95.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

There is a nice size Emily in with the babies... Tomorrow I will put a plastic tie around it so you can have it... I will start looking at both our weather and get and idea when to ship then tell you... Ask Lynn, last year when no one was shipping anything I pulled off a good one... I shipped to Lynn as a picker upper for winter blues and everyone of those plant lived.... Of course they were going to someone special :-)
Has anyone who got babies from me this last time gotten any that are all white?
Where in NC did you go? We live 15 mins from the NC boarder.... If I am not mistaken it take about 5 hours to get to Baltimore from Danville... We went there a couple of years ago to see the ships... We all had a good time...
Hugs,
Susan
Here is on of my few AV's... To lazy to get and find the name.. It is a standard Av trailer I believe...

gorgeous pink!

I went to Enfield, North Carolina right off of 95. Emporia was the last VA city we passed before entering into NC.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Your streps are beautiful, Susan. Shanika, I lived in Lumberton, NC for about a year. Your pics are beautiful too. Thanks for sharing ladies. I have one with buds on it...can't wait to see the blooms :)

(Zone 1)

"Lurker Lin" here, and I just have to tell you all how much I enjoy seeing your beautiful blooms! Really lovely!

Susan, I love how you did that collage photo with all your beautiful Strep's ... I need to learn how to do that!

I have nothing blooming to share right now, not even a non-gessie! Well, actually I do have one holiday cactus in full bloom. I do still have a couple of Chirita's but they haven't flowered in who knows how long. I know, I know ... it would help if I'd feed them!

We've had the longest cold spell of any winter in history down here. I am just hoping half of my plants survive.

Keep those great photo's coming!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thank you everyone for the kind words..... Lin, I use a program called photo elf to make the pictures like that... I think it was Jan one day I said I was going to group a bunch of pictures then I could not remember how I did it..LOLOL Brain worked a little better last night....
Lynn, we had nothing to lose with shipping last year as they were all ones I had growing... I was happy they did really well... It was just luck...
Shanika, Emporia is about 3 hours away I believe from Danville... I will have to ask hubby about 95 LOL
Aspen, what is your real name as I am trying very hard to remember all of you...LOL
Ok going to rinse my nose out as I just got in from work... Where do all the crazies come from???
Hugs,
Susan
