jerii: That is so cool! I would be ecstatic if I found a seedpod on a hoya! Are you sowing those lacunosa seeds? If so, please keep us posted on how they do.
boojum: Congrats on the australis bloom! Doesn't it smell awesome .. one of my favorite hoya scents.
January Flowers
Thanks Lin!! I am very happy to finally see a bloom. The scent is heavenly!
Thanks Lin I potted them as soon as I found the burst seed pod but so far nothing has occurred in the planter. Like I said previously I'm probably watching them to death!!! Should something sprout, I'll be sure and let you know!!!!
Boojum, congrats on the australis bloom, and very nice photo as well!
Jeri, keep those seeds warm and moist, and they should germinate in short order. My cumingiana seedlings are doing very well. I just transplanted them into 2 inch pots (13 total with 2-3 seedlings per pot). If you are interested, when the weather gets much warmer, I'll swap you a couple of my seedlings for a couple of yours. The thing with a seedling is you really don't know what you will end up with in the end, and it should be interesting to watch them and wait for a bloom. Just make sure they are well labeled as seedlings if passed on to others.
Doug
You are on Doug but we haven't had blast off yet so I may be premature offering a trade. I checked yesterday and nothing yet!!!!
I'm confident that within a few days you will have "blast off!"
LOL!!! I'll let you know!!!
GREAT photo, boojum....the tiny fuzz on the ssp. australis are so visible and clear... Oh lovely....
Thanks. I have a DSLR now and I'm using a macro lens. I love the red hiding in the centerof the flower. And the scent!
Boojum, great photos! congrats on your flowers!
boojum: That is a great photo, showing the fuzz on the leaves and the pretty blooms! You need to add your pictures to PF: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54435/
Done! Thanks for the link!
Found this in the greenhouse yesterday. I've had this plant for 7 plus years and received it mis-identified from September Song. I am leaning towards Hoya calycina ssp. calycina but it could also be in the Hoya australlis clan or a cv. Regardless, it is always a treasure to find a bloom in January. Spring is on the way my friends!

My thought too, Mel. Are the leaves big, sort of a grey green and pubescent?
Mel: Lovely blooms ... are they fragrant?
I uncovered plants on the deck and porch yesterday to see how things fared after the extreme low temperatures we had last week and the week before. Most of the hoya's were inside the house but not having much space inside, many things had to remain on the deck and crammed into the unheated back porch, covered with blankets. Unfortunately this is the worst winter I've ever seen here in Florida. We had 9 days of night time temp's in the mid to upper 20's and a few days where we didn't get out of the 40's (one day we didn't even get out of the 30's!!) My large H. compacta looks fine, cv. Iris Marie is showing a few leaves with cold damage, the large baskets of DS-70 and brevialata are totally dead. I have a smaller basket of each hiding out there somewhere too ... hopefully they have some life left in them. My Dracaena marginata planted on the south side of the house has lots of leaves all over the ground but it looks pretty good for the most part and I think it will be okay and recover. I have a large potted Philodendron that was too large to move inside and really no place to put it since the deck was crammed full so it stayed out under a tree in the corner of the yard and was covered with a blanket ... it looks pitiful and I'm hoping the roots are still alive so maybe it will re-sprout. There's a large potted Pencil Tree (Euphorbia tirucalli) that was hit hard by the cold too ... In the past I've lost two very large Pencil trees that were planted in the ground. The landscape in this part of Florida looks really pitiful ... everything is brown and ugly which we aren't used to seeing.
It's good to see that some folks have Hoya's blooming in January!
Carol,
Yes, leaves are pubescent, big, and lighter green. It has been a great plant, but, buds blasted and I had given up on blooms.
Lin,
I know you guys were hit hard and hope your plants/garden re-coop from the inclement weather. I know Ric's garden was hit hard. I really feel the pain of Florida growers. Each year I dread the sight of my garden after the first frost, but, I expect it. I hope your precious plants recover and you have few losses. If I can help replace any loss, just say the word.
Mel
Mel: That is so sweet. I don't think my losses are going to be anywhere as bad as folks like Ric who live in area's where they don't ever expect to get such awful winter weather. Here on the east coast of Florida we've had frost and the occasional freeze over the years but never so many nights in a row of below freezing. I know some things will recover in time but I've talked about downsizing for awhile and think this might just be the time for me to start, LOL.
The weather has been really weird everywhere this year. It was near 80º here yesterday and today's high is only @ 60. I'm just thankful we aren't having days where the temperature doesn't get out of the 30's or 40's ... now that was hard for us Floridians to deal with! I bet Ric and others over in the SW part of Fla are really saddened at the damage to their gardens. It's rare for that area to have such low temperatures for extended periods like they had to experience this winter. I posted on the Fla Gardening forum that maybe in spring we can have a thread where folks list things they lost in the freeze, and we can help each other replace lost plants if someone has extra of what someone else is looking for.
Lovely, Carol ... really nice color to that foliage, I bet the plant is beautiful!
Beautiful flowers, Carol!
I'm so sorry to hear of plant loss in Florida. Please count me in if I can be of any help in providing cuttings for lost plants.
Can pictures be posted here from online photo storage sites like Flickr or Photobucket? I've posted from my hardrive before but can't figure out how to post from the aforementioned!
Kelly
Beautiful pictures Carol! I can't believe at how young an age H. patella will bloom. I really made the right decision having you grow that out for me. Wow!
Mel, congrats on that large beautiful January bloom.
Kelly, part of the reason I have never really explored other online Hoya sites is because of the ease of adding photos here at DG. It is so easy - no having to resize images or figure anything out. I just got a new computer, and just completed the monumental task of organizing all of my photos. Every Hoya I have now has its own folder devoted to it. I can now easily find most any photo that I want. I wish I could tell you how to post from Flicker or Photobucket.
Doug
My Hoya that's been on a bit of an identity merry-go-round is flowering again/still. I've decided to go back to my original name for it - H. golamcoana "Los Banos". I know the flower colour of H. golamcoana is different but there's often a lot of variation of colour within the same species. That's probably why this was labelled "Los Banos". I've never found photos of H. golamcoana "Los Banos" to either prove or disprove what it is, nor has anyone else. So I've made an "Executive Decision" that it is.
It seems to do well despite heavy rain. "Kapit Borneo" loses its buds in rain. The H. walliana lost its peduncles in heavy rain. H. Pubicalyx seems too afraid to show a bud in the rain. But "Los Banos" just soldiers on right through the thick of it, fragrance and all.
TB...why don't you write Ted Green with the picture...he knows that clone well.
Ooohhh TB I like that flower.
Carol, love that campanulata and I really like the smaller cystiantha. These are on my list to "acquire" this year. Like I don't have enough on that list, LOL
Dee
I have finally learned how to grow my campanulata...deep shade... the fragrance is like Lemon Pledge!!!!
Wonderful all!
Grrrr! I hate it when I lose an entire post! I typed a long post here and went to another screen to check something and came back and my entire post is gone .... Drat! I will start over.
Tropic: I love that bloom on "Los Banos", really beautiful!
Carol: Your H. campanulata is awesome! Those blooms are so different than any hoya I have and I really love the foliage on that one too!
Aaah, what can I say about patella ... that went to the top of my wish list after a gorgeous photo you posted sometime last year. I ordered it this past summer and hope it puts on a lot of growth when the weather begins to warm up. I look forward to seeing a couple of those nice blooms in person. Doug, great idea in having Carol grow it out for you!
H. pottsii has been on my wish list for a long time. I don't know why I've never ordered that one because the foliage is amazing! I like pretty foliage almost as much as some of the flowers.
I don't have anything blooming right now but as I mentioned, pretty foliage is nice too. I got this H. merillii in a trade with Ric (ricfl) about 1 1/2 years ago. It sat and didn't do much because I had it in deep shade. It really put on growth this past summer when I moved it to more sunlight. I adore the foliage on this one! I received another cutting of merillii from SunshineSW a couple of months ago and will be adding it to this pot when the weather warms up. Even if I never see a flower on this plant, I love the colorful foliage.
On a sadder note, I could probably have an entire thread of miscellaneous plants showing cold damage from the extreme low temp's and freezes we experienced this winter.
I've been out on the porch rooting through the plants to move some out by the pool to take advantage of the sun and this is what my formerly beautiful H. Iris Marie looks like today. I've never gotten this Hoya to bloom and am hoping I can save the part that's still green.
:(
I would not let any dead material stay...it is so prone to disease that can spread to the healthy parts....
