Burd, Gary, Boojum & Rose ......BEAUTIFUL!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.
I hope all you folks had a Very Merry Christmas. And I hope your New Year is filled with joy.
I sure had a good Christmas, my wife bought me a Canon Ring-flash for my Canon 100mm macros lens. Blow me away, I just mentioned it to her when she asked what I wanted for Christmas - never expected to get one.. I kinda have a hankering to dabble in Macro photography. Looking forward to Spring to find some insects and flowers to snap.
BTW, my wife is in an extremely good mood. She only has two more days to go (Monday and Tuesday of next week) and she retires after 31 years of working at Ft.. Benning, Ga.

Even though the sun wasn't shining, heavy overcast, I put the Tamron 2x teleconverter on the 40D, behind my Canon 70-300 IS lens, and took the lens all the way out to 300mm. This cardinal was at a distance of 26-28 yards away - the camera was hand held, no tripod - the lens' IS worked nicely.
I had to use manual focus. The 40D's setting were 1/100 shutter speed, f/ 5.6 and ISO 1600. The original was underexposed, so I used Elements 7 to tweak it up to this. It hasn't been cropped, same size as came out of the camera. I'm still figuring out all the ways to adjust shutter speed, f stop, and ISO. It is confusing to me. But, I think I need to increase shutter speed and take the ISO up.
And, I'm still looking for a sunny day.

We have not seen (or heard) an eastern tohee in years. Please send one up our way next spring.
Interesting bird, Margaret.
Hope you had a grand Christmas,
and to all here too.
A couple of days ago, we had a Warbling? Vireo
at the feeder. The dear little thing should be in
Mexico enjoying the warmth, they are usually
migratory and should be gone in Sept-Oct.
It was watching a whole gaggle of bushtits
in their usual romp on the suet,
and was eating the same for a while.
Hope to see it again.
Wonderful photos everyone. I must stay tuned to this thread, so many interesting birds.
It is very cold here, 12 degrees this morning and may get up to mid 20s. Have had nice sunny afternoons for past 3 or 4 days.
There is a very shy pair of chickadees staying pretty much in my yard. For 10 years I had a pair of chickadees, raised their family, and I so enjoyed them. A Sharp Shinned hawk, either scared them away or caught them. No chickadees for several years, now at last another pair. There are just too many house sparrows and chase most of the other small birds away from feeder. I am trying to starve the sparrows away. Only putting out what Chicken Scratch in one small area , that I think the quail will eat so none is left for sparrows. Have two feeders for goldfinches, one is the upside down feeder and the other is a net feeder. Here is a picture of the net feeder and 10 goldfinches.

Not too many customers for the suet as yet. There has been a downy wp plus a few titmice.
Great pics everyone!
Margaret, That Corella looks like he is up to no good, very cute!
Great Blue Heron studying the sky from atop the observatory, in Gilbert, AZ !
I took over 1500 bird photos on my vacation, 10% might be worth keeping! I've been slow in sorting and sharing due to computer problems. It was in the shop for two days, then worked good for two days, and now it is acting up again.
