You do? Because I bet I can get you one....

lol...I love floppy big hats. Brim down-ers. Where does one go to procure such-like?? And my problem...child sized head...

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Such a charming picture CMoxon... For a moment I was going to ask if that was your garden...

I got to admit when I was a Red Hatter, (Pink hatter cause I was under 50) I got some wonderful hats, and had fun wearing them, and Yes I had one lavender and 3 pink cowgirl hats for my collection. I had straw hats, ladies hats and behive hats from the 50's and a fancy one wide brimmed with silk trim all done in pink, Now they are put up for my grand daughter to play with when she is older with the exception of the 50's hat, that is a collector's item. Now its ball caps and cowgirl hats..

I could see me showing up at a roping or a rodeo wearing one of them fancy hats... LOLOL

Jay can you enclose a picture so I can see what you are talking about?

How do you keep ball caps on if you have short hair? I am always losing mine to wind or low branches when shredding to pastures. They invariably dive straight under the shredder. - Never the same after.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Porkpal.....glue. :-) (or alternatively, duct tape).

Seriously, if it were me, I'd probably attach a string with one of those moving pobble things, which is what I have on one of my straw hats. Works quite well for wind even with a large hat. The pobble moves up and down the string to tighten/loosen it. I don't know it's official name but "pobble thing" sounds good to me.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Porkpal, Just make it extra tight on your head, It may hurt the first time, but you will get use to it.
One of my cowboy hats is too big for my head, so I took some paper towel in the peice that folds down, both in the front and back and it made the band tighter and it helped it stay down.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Hatpins went the way of snoods. You don't see either about much anymore :( My fav straw hat is in the Indiana Jones style. It constantly whooshes away in the wind so definitely needs a hatpin. I have never worn a shredded hat. I think it might be nice. It could be braided on my head methinks.

Richmond, TX

I guess attaching the string and popple thing would be within my limited sewing skills. Tight isn't good enough if I duck insufficiently under a branch. I have customized hats that are too loose with stick-on foam weatherstripping, but duct tape or string may be needed here. I used to have a "lucky" cap which eluded the shredder for ages: getting brushed off but hanging in the tree, or landing on top of the shredder deck, or miraculously missing the cap-eating monster altogether. However on one such occasion it was subsequently grabbed up by one of the dogs and destroyed. I was furious!

Hmmm...Nut cousinship extending to hats....

looked Claire...wide-brimmed raffia sun hat. Sounds like a new thing to learn to make...they had a few I could dye starting from only $248...ulp.

I had a busy Christmas and couldn't check the forum for a few days.....OMG, am I ever far behind!!!! So, hi everyone, hope you all had a grate Christmas and I'll be spending the rest of the day reading back posts. :-)

Can i ask a chicken question ? please pretty please ? :)
i got a guy taking my naked neck roo and he is giving me two laying hens .
i have a kennel to seperate them from the flock .
any other stuff i should know ?
how should i introduce them to the flock ? or do they even care if new chickens are introduced ?
i think i may regret this but .... they guy is on his way.
thanks for any help
i hope i didn't cross any lines and break any sulking rules LOL
if i did, i will and forever be truly ..."my bad"

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I free range my birds all day on my acreage, so for newbies, I keep them in an enclosure for a week. This lets them get to know "where they live" and it also lets the other hens see them in there without being right on top of them. Then after that week, I just let them out. Usually there are a few scuffles in the first couple of hours and then everybody settles into their place.

Also, while they are in that "isolation" time, I check them VERY carefully for lice, mites, other symptoms. Many people isolate new birds in quarantine for much longer. I find that isn't very practical for me so I kind of take chances separating them for only a week, but it has worked for me so far.

Sounds interesting! Send pics!

ok the dead is done
thank you for letting me get a quick question in :)
i traded two hens for the roo. I think they are bantams . Very pretty but its dark out .
I put my other roo in the kennel since he tried to mount the new ladies. Sheesh.
i will get pics tomorrow .
if they are bantams , i may have my DD do her 4 H with them.
I decided to let them go with the ladies cuz the roo is in the kennel.
So i m hoping for the best.
tomorrow we should have a door on the GH and they can do in there.
thanks again for all the help CMoxon !
hugs

Oooh, very prettiful!

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

Very prettiful indeed, but what an unnatural mother to cut off dd's head at the neck and not share her. One would think you preferred chicks to childer.

I did a painting of GD with a chick; this was way back when she had curls:

Thankee, thankee. Still wanting to see Taynor's dd! Peepers are nice, though.

ROFLLL gee whiz . Yes my Dh thinks the same thing LOL , he wonders if i like the chickens better than i like him and the kids ? hmmm still thinking on that one myself *wink*

A hen will usually be smaller and more streamlined, with a skinny comb, unless it's a rose come, then it will be wide and about 1/4 in. tall. A rooster is bigger, more muscular, with a tall, sometomes floppy comb, unless it's rosecombed. They also make differents sounds when "talking"! The rooster also has longer tailfeathers, and they "cascade", while a hen's will stand straight up.
Are your new girls a lot smaller or just a bit smaller than your others? They look like game hens!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

The neck feathers on the roosters will be pointy and often very shiny in appearance, whereas the hen neck feathers are rounded on the tips. Also they have the saddle hackle feathers that cascade like Doe said, where the tail attaches to the body. Your two are definitely hens. Not sure about breed - possibly mixed breed. It will be helpful when you get eggs to tell us if they are brown or white. They don't appear to have muffs or feathered legs, so that eliminates some breeds.

they guy i got them from didn't know either. He got them from an auction . They are a bit smaller than mine. The ones i have are a mixed variety of breeds. He said they are about 8 months ? or maybe a year 'ish i think he said . I couldn't tell really i was standing out in 0 temps waiting for him to get to my house. It was dark too, did i mention it was cold ? and i waited an hr for him brrrrr. He had a GPS , he still got lost !! LOL what i do for chickens huh ? ! Wha wha.
Doe thank you i m learning so much from you all :)
good to know they are hens LOL i don't need another roo at this point. "ack"
Big Red is our other Roo and he is not happy away from the ladies . He is crowing more and really giving me the cackle when i come in to the coop. I don't think he likes the dog kennel.
The new ladies are very tame . very soft too. My headless DD said " oh they are so soft , like puffy , silkie soft" LOL.

Richmond, TX

Sounds as if they will at least be good pets whatever they are.
