Lucky, lucky you, gardenpom, MGs in the middle of winter. Gorgeous blooms, can't wait until Spring for them to be here.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Beautiful! I love your photography and your blooms. Thanks!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Awesome shots, Gardenpom! A nice variety of color, too! :-)

Ya know ... I think you have the right idea! Grow I. nils outside in summer and I. purpureas in winter! I'm gonna make a note of that! My I. purpureas are still hanging in there, too. But I've neglected them. I need to fertilize them to perk them up! :-) Possibly with some acidic fertilizer. Tomorrow I shall do that!

Melbourne, FL

You are welcome, Debra...thanks DMgardener and Becky. I'll be starting some MG seeds for spring sometime next month.....mostly new ones from people here that I have not tried yet. Looking forward to it.

Hey Jackie,

I was able to get a pandurata seed germinated that you sent to me! I can't wait to watch it grow.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Joseph, wonderful news. It's easy to grow and getting a head start on
summer won't hurt a thing. Perhaps will shorten your time till bloom from 2 yrs to 1 yr. Keep us posted please.

Will do, Jackie. It appears it will have a widely separated set of cotyledons like I have seen in Ipomoea lindheimeri. Good to hear giving it a head start will bring flowering potential a bit earlier for the plant!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Joseph, that's an assumption on my part. Karen, Blue, told me
some time ago that her pandy bloomed the year after she planted it.
I hope that's what she meant to type.
For many of us, 2 yrs is almost un-bearable. lol

(Zone 7a)

Oops, Patootie - I apologize if I said that - my ol' pandy (sown in 2007) dug in its heels and refused to cough up any seeds whatsoever until this past summer of 2009 - I had been prowling for seeds with no success for so long that I didn't believe it - one seed was finally produced. It's a really nice one, too. Does anyone want it? If so, send me a SABSE, with return label and postage loose inside.

Patootie, my memory tells me you were going to send one more pandy seed to me so I could have a second vine from different parentage for interpollination in the future - are we still okay on that?

Joseph, you will love this mg - seems like it has the longest period of flowering I've ever seen in any herbaceous plant - and it is so pretty. Mine gets part sun, and is planted within the dripline of a monster silver maple.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Karen, Yes I will be sending you 2 of my fresh pandy sds. Let me
know if there's anything else I grew that you would like.
Karen, I knew you planted yours in 07 but didn't you get your first blooms last yr?

(Zone 7a)

Jackie, nope, my pandy didn't produce any seeds in 2008. I had just about given up on finding any seeds in 2009, but finally found one in October '09.

This afternoon, we enjoyed a squirrel perched on a long trellis along the far boundary of our garden against the back of the house. And in that snow-scape, he was feasting on guess what? seed pods of I. purpurea Kniola's Black! I'm wondering if perhaps our pandy has been setting seed all along, but that squirrels (not to mention birds) were getting them before we even saw any?

Well, I did see lots of immature pods on pandy that never ripened, but just shrivelled and fell off.

Karen

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Yes I got the shriveling and dropping seed syndrome too. Just a sign
we need the different pollen source I suppose. I will be sending yours out next week too Karen. Trying to get all mine out of here so I can think about the new season
and what I want to start. I have some sds from a different member now who was generous so will send you a couple of those pandy's too.
I was so hoping that if we started some pandys early, they might bloom in one yr. Guess we will let Joseph tell us since he's getting an early start with his pandy.

(Zone 7a)

Jackie, my pandy did bloom in 2008, which was the first year after it was sown; but I did not see any seeds ripen.

To Jackie and all, I'll be better able to catch up on d and email next week and apologize for getting so far behind.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Karen, that is amazing that it bloomed the following yr after planting.
Not surprised that it did not make any sds that first year.Maybe
just not mature enough for sds to form. Very interesting mg

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have some pandy seeds some from native kansas, some from emma, I can share if anyone wants send a sabe.
Happy New year.
I am glad you got a germination, Joseph..
I am now waiting, I planted three seeds, each from a different source..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, you were so generous with your pandy sds from kansas,
I am going to send Karen, Blue a few of those. I can send
Joseph a few too so he will also have more than one source of pollen.
If these new ones bloom in a yr, the pollen from them can be doing their thing even if that bloom won't make a seed pod. At least I hope
that's the way it works. lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I know I heard that from Emma I think on one of these threads, that same plant different strain makes it better. If you are going to send to Karen, I will send some to Joseph. how does that sound?

Gee that sounds good to moi, LOL!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

i was puttering around the Basement Garden this am and found this little cutie..
it is in the coleus pot and didn't even see it .. poor thing is crowded out, but am not going to attempt to move it. It has varigated leaves and looks like a Roman Candy ..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, That's a cutie, love the pink.
Great if you send pandy sds to Joseph and I send to Blue.
That way I can keep a few sds in case I don't succeed the first time.
In a couple of yrs, we might have more sds than we know what to do with.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

thats a great thing to think about more seeds LOL
Okay, I have some seeds from some of his grow outs I had past summer too.. think I should send him a few since he has the parent flowers.... Thanks, Joseph!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

was wondering, has anyone heard from our dear friend Colin?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - You know ... I was wondering the same thing. I hope he's doing okay. BTW - What a pretty flower. Love that color of pastel blue! Is it an I. nil? Thanks again for giving us a smile with your basement greenhouse photos! What a remarkable set-up you have there! I really want one, too! :-)

Hey gang! I am expecting SNOW here! LOL! Well ...not really, but it is certainly cold enough to have snow! LOL! What a hassle dragging most of my potted plants into the garage! And here I thought we were going to have a mild winter! NOT! The one good thing ... colder temps, mean colder ocean waters ... which hopefully will mean not as strong of hurricanes should any develop this summer. :-)

Brrrr ... I need to go get cuttings of all the I. batatas so I don't lose them permanently. :-(

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

It is so cold here I am not going out again, I went out to put out the bird and squirrell feed, they came and ate and are now hiding where they can be warm.. Papa Squirrell has come within 6 inches of my hand now, to get a treat, but he just gets spooked at the last minute, darn it.. prollly my teeth chattering scared him..
can't get over how cold it is in Florida, not like when I lived there in a winter ...
Back to work tommorrow, ugh..
That blue flower is an I. Nil from Joseph, wasn't named tho.. I am watching the buds form on a little vine up in the south window.. wish I had tagged it..

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Nice blue Debra!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Yes a lovely blue.
I rec'd seeds from Colin a couple of weeks ago.
I dmailed to thank him but have not heard back.
A wonderful pkg of seeds he sent me, thanks again Colin.
I'm getting ready to send out Colins and Beckys, zinnia reds,
woofie's and Joseph's, Blue's when she's ready.

I have a seed root showing on one of my Ipomoea violacea seeds! I hope it survives. The flower is white with a very long tube and leaves broad and a little like a tricolor. Leaf. There are photos in PlantFiles.

joeswife, Post #7422959 is THE blue of the year in MGs!!!! It looks a bit like a large dinner plate with some chips in the edge;D

Becky, snow?? In Z10? Only 2 1/2 inches of snow here today, hope ur MGs will be fine!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I was partially kidding about the snow part. But you just never know ...

I remember the snow that came down years ago. I believe it was right before Christmas of 1989. Our yard at our old house had a light dusting of snow all over the ground! And we could see the tiny snowflakes coming down. It melted pretty quickly ... but OH! what a sight! :-) I had left the sprinkler on and all the trees and plants had long icicles on them! I have actual photographs somewhere filed away. :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_snow_events_in_Florida

Tomorrow the temps are supposed to be in the low 70's and tonight it is supposed to be around 40 degree. Not too bad. But then Saturday and Sunday it is supposed to be freezing again! Eeek!

Melbourne, FL

Hey Becky...they are calling for a high of 45 here on Saturday, with a 30% chance of snow!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - Your daytime high is going to be our low here! LOL! You have my sympathy! Stay warm and keep those animals and family members warm too! :-) It was very cold last night. My dog kept my feet warm last night as she laid at the end of the bed right next to my feet! Ahhhhhhhh ... :-) Better than a heating blanket! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

This am at 5:30 this was a bloom.. it is sideways down here on the big putor and I still have no clue why.. the bloom is an inch in diameter.. maybe an inch and a half, the leaf next to it is my passi maypops I grew from seed.

Pretty bloom Debra.
Becky, trying to keep everyone warm and all the pets too.
At least two, maybe three more bitter cold night to get thru.

Stay warm all!

Wiki says that there might be snow in Orlando? Cold!!!

The 4" of snow is glittering under a sky full of stars... Gorgeous. Wait... just clouded over again, lol.
