Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #45

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

ridesredmule, I use the peroxide also to stop the dampening off. Just like Sharon, I use 1 part H2O2(peroxide) from the bottle to 10 parts distilled water. I use it for a week or 2 on the newest seedlings. I read somewhere that the H2O2 will bind to the impurities in tap water and not do as good of a job as distilled. I never did an experiment to see if there is a difference and if there is, how much of a difference.

Star, those are some good ideas on how to keep out the slugs. I usually keep my WS containers on a brick patio too like tcs and so have never had a slug problem. They are right outside the back door, so easy to water, but hubby doesn't like the look (sigh) and I think they need more shade once spring hits. I will either use the boxes like tcs or move them to a new spot which means they will be on the ground.

All 4 seasons ... got to love each one!
But we don't get the tons of snow here like some places. We are usually snow covered in Jan and Feb, then its the freeze thaw and that is not playing fair. We have the cold and not the snow.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Hey Mekos! I just finally mapped out where you are! Not far at all. Do you ever get to round-ups? I went to my first this summer in Columbia... fun!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I use peroxide solution too, it works wonders for me. I used to have problems overwatering my succulents during winter, I think because it took them too long to dry out in the cool room. Now I use H2O2 solution to water them in winter, and haven't lost one since :-)

Mekos..... Happy Birthday!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Came across this in another thread recently (sorry, don't remember who to credit)... 1 part household ammonia, 1 part water in a spray bottle to spritz slugs. Has the same effect as salt (eg, not for the squeamish) without getting salt in your plants.

edited to say that 1:1 is almost certainly too strong... tcs below suggests 10 or 20 parts water to 1 part ammonia

Happy Birthday, Mekos!

Jill .... from a hosta forum perspective, that may be a bit harsh on the plants.

the ammonia mixture is a 10:1 ... that will make those nasties just 'melt', as i've witnessed it. yuck. but if it saves the plants.

Yr welcome herbspirit.

Sorry about the link to recipe source. There are 3 recipes there for
potato fudge & 2 for potato fudge cake.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks! 10:1 does seem more reasonable with the ammonia.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I think one gal did a 5:1 or even 6:1 and burned some of her plants [that would probably kill some tiny seedlings].... so most use the 10:1 and i know a gal uses a 20:1

I'm just glad i dont have slug issues in the WS containers.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Ok I'm back I wasn't ignoring you all I was just trying to get my box ready and have been in every one of these piggy swaps and just know I have forgotten something to put in the box Ha! Just let me know Ella and I will send it out when I hear from you sorry about it being late I bet I'm the last piggy to get their box in!

See some of you asked how I keep up with everything well very slowly lol See I'm so late getiing my seeds in and just know I missed something Ha!

I've got a couple of cans of old egg shells down in the basement that I have been crushing and saving forever with the dry summers we have had I haven't had to use them for the slugs around my hosta and forgot about them last summer with all the rain we had and bought some other slug bait to put around them so I'll use the egg shells until I run out then get some of that D. earth and mix with the dirt in the WS containers can't believe I haven't thought about doing that before!

I have all kinds of slugs around here sometimes and those big fat ones! One year I saw one of those big fat ones climbing my pic nick table to get to the jugs but it's funny that they don't bother my plants in one area that stays moist all the time with a bunch of plants in it like hosta, coral bells and toadlilies, very little damage there. I have seen the big fat ones on the concrete and doesn't look to me like they could crawl on concrete but they do! I see big slime marks where they have been in the driveway too lol

I used to just sit my jugs on the ground when I first started WS no one told me to try and keep them away from the slugs, now like I said I put shingles under them not sure if it helps but I do have jugs full of seedlings now but I'm going to try other ways because this year I'm going back to trying to sow like 200 jugs and don't have enough shingles for that!

Ella I tried sand paper before and when it rains a lot it washes the sand off of them :) I'll never forget when I saw my first snail eggs I was transplanting gal. pots in the spring and it was the year the crickets were taking over in my pots too had big old holes in the dirt from them and saw those little eggs and wondered if they were cricket eggs there were so many of those lol Then some how figured out they weren't cricket eggs but snail eggs!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Sorry Mekos forgot to say Happy Birthday!

It was bsgardens birthday the other day too but I was too busy to get in so Happy Birthday you you too!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LeBug, you won't be the last piggy in... that might be me... hoping to get caught up this weekend while snowed in! I don't think I'll have a lot of unsorted extras to include this year, though, so at least Star will be able to sort them into troughs quickly. I'm behind on absolutely everything this Christmas... but we're having such a good time with Little Bit! :-) Hopefully I'll be able to participate more fully (and in a more timely fashion) next year.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I am SO embarrassed by what I have to say, I feel so stupid. I looked at the link showing the seeds of Echies, and I think what I have gathered is just dried petals. I am going to search through all of the bags that I put the Echie "Seeds, ie petals" and see if I can find any actual seeds. I am so sorry!!! My trial program for Word expired, so I cannot get back in there to finish making my labels. Dang, it is going to be one of those days. I am trying really hard to get my bags finished so I can mail them today.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

Happy Birthday Mekos

Thanks you guys. I saved the links for the fudge, too. Everyone here is so nice.

Lynn -- you should be able to open your DOC in OpenOffice ...

or Google Docs even.... that i know for sure ,because i've opened and uploaded my Excel file into Google Docs.
but this Open Office you can download ot your PC. I have never used it though.

Thanks Teresa, I am now trying to use the Microsoft Works Word Processor. It is loading a picture, but is SLOW. But it appears that it might work. Thanks.

I am so behind on everything. Here is my stack of seed bags that I am trying to finish today.

I got out of my appointments too late to make it to the post office. I will try to get there tomorrow before the storm. They don't deliver or pick up mail in this town, so I have to walk to the post office. It isn't far, just down and up the mountain. A pleasant stroll if it isn't icy. I have time to fold some more packets and add more seeds!

Instead of making fudge, I make truffles from Julia Child's recipe. I haven't started baking, yet. Maybe this weekend. If I make things too early, I am tempted to eat them!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lynn -- I always enjoyed Works.... had it on my very first PC so many moons ago. I found it less tedious than Office, especially the database. But for College you have to have Office, so i've at lest been lucky to get the student discount.

Marietta, MS(Zone 7b)

Happy Birthday Mekos! :) Happy belated Birthday bsgardens! :)

My son went over the FAP, so I'm on extra slowww speed until 1:00am. I got my package sent off to Star today. I hope I did everything right. Confirmation number is 0309 0330 0000 9561 3303.

Weather is nice & warm here today. Too wet to get much done though.

I have been using OpenOffice for about a month now & it works just fine except I cannot find a way to import information from the web like I could with Office. I liked Works also, used way less resources than Offcie or OpenOffice.

Happy Birthday Mekos -- and many many more

Star my box went out today and I think I've gotten everything right. I want to say to everyone that I have really enjoyed this swap - lots of fun, and I have tried my best to get everything done right, as I am sure everyone else has, but I know with all of this seed packing I probably made a mistake or two - knowing me. I realize that it takes a lot of time, love and patience to grow a plant from seed and I don't want to let anyone down, but if I did make a mistake on any seed, please forgive and let me know and I will try my best to make it right with you.

And Star what can I say -- YOU'RE THE BUSINESS!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Happy Birthday Mekos!

Star - my bodx also went out today. I have sent a LOT of extra seeds which are not listed - but they are sorted alphabetically - so maybe that will help. I will confirmation number to you via dmail.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Star, did you get your keyboard set up yet? My son is a computer geek, so he might have spare parts hanging around that I can give to you.

Here's our Christmas tree. It has been like this for a few days. Maybe we'll get it decorated before Christmas.

I am getting better using Works. I actually made some labels that look good. I didn't know how to size, change fonts, etc, so my first ones look like big cards. So don't laugh when you get them!!!!

Seandor, I have you on my "To Do" list to sort through and send you a goody bag of seeds. Is there anything in particular that you want/don't want?

You are gona be busy, The mail people manage to get those pkg. delivered.
You be careful out there.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I wish I had a camera to take a picture of my kitchen table no room to even sit a coffee cup and tv room lol I have all of my seed cleaning evidence in paper bags waiting for a good day to pitch them and found more of those bags hid in a drawer in the back bedroom where most of my extra pots, seed baggies, tape and such are that's three rooms decaded to the piggy swap and some of the mess left from last year since I had such a harder time with dad last year :)

I wish I could say that everything is going to get cleaned up BUT now I need to start looking for more paper work for court, still have bulbs that need taken care of, elephant ears that still have spiders on them in the basement I can't believe those are still living down there with no heat and all of the cold weather we have had haven't even watered them lol But I do need to decide what I'm going to do with them if I'm going to let them grow in their pots or put them to sleep for the winter...I haven't even had time to think about it!

Critter you have the best excuse of all with that little bundle of joy, Christmas will never be the same at your house and don't plan on having more time next year little bit will be walking by then and you will really be in big trouble trying to catch up LOL

Well Ella I just remembered the Monk's Hood in the freezer! So just let me know what else I didn't put in the box when you get it and I'll include that too LOL Woops 'return label' just remembered that it doesn’t pay to rush HA! Just let me know LOL At least the seeds are out of my hair and on their way to yours :) snort snort

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Hey Le...... Don't forget to get monks'hood out of freezer. LOl ( ducks before I get hti with seed baggy. heheheheh)

Don't worrk about mailign label. I'll make one. : )

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I don't see how you guys do it! Star I didn't send you that much and I couldn't stay caught up! now that's bad

Star, I hope you are feeling ok. Sorry you had to go out in all tht mess today. Don't want you to come down with anything.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

And here I was worried about you forgetting them when you sent the seeds out! I went to the freezer to see if I still had a microwave something to eat for tonite and get hit with this note 'Don't Forget' thought oh darn, well that's not what I thought but I couldn't say it on here snort snort I just hope that's all I forgot! Thanks for the mailing label but we will wait and see if everything is in the box first lol

Ella I think you have had enough thrown at you today I'm a nice piggy I wouldn't do that, oops just dropped my new nose ring is that it I see flying over your head snort snort

I'm not a responsible piggy this year, no organization at all!

Hope that shower was nice and warm for you and you have your coffee by now!

(Zone 7a)

Happy Birthday, Mekos & Bsgardens - here's one of my favorite snow scenes for winter dreams - http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/60_odd_provinces/images/26_Mount_Haruna_Kozuke.jpg

LeBug, I think you and I are twins separated at birth - your 'arrangements' of seed/packet/wintersowing paraphernalia (sp?) sound like mine, but not so bad. Poor dh hasn't seen the buried kitchen table in too long.

Ella, there's something hot and chocolately you might like to unwrap - nevermind waiting till Christmas. I hope you're all dried off and warm and toasty by now. Can I borrow your mail person? Ours leaves packages out in the rain/snow in the street...the po complaint department knows me well grrr

May the snow be pretty and short-lived for whoever of us gets it,

karen

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Karen :) What are kitchen tables for anyway I haven't eaten on one for years lol Dad always kept me straight on keeping the table clean when he was here but now the cats enjoy playing with whatever falls off! They don't even jump on it anymore there's no room lol

I have a nice mail lady she toots her horn if I'm not out there and my car is in the drive, if I'm not at home she puts packages by the left hand side of the door so the sun doesn't hit it or the rain, she's a keeper! Now the mail man that takes her place when she is on vacation or what ever he's a different story if I have something coming I wait to leave after he has made his run or I run to town before he gets here he's always late I can set my watch by what time the lady gets here, she warns me when she is taking off for the day lol

I have a nice mail lady too. She brings me plants and bulbs and invites me to come to her house to pick seeds from her plants too. I'm always sharing seeds with her. She is a keeper. She brings everything and puts it inside the screen room if I'm not home so the heat or rain won't hurt it.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

my mailman did not deliver me a box today....I'm pouty!
