Thank you very much for a lovely tour on this dark and dreary day. Took my coffee w/me(was careful not to spill any) and had a wonderful stroll, I feel much more like facing the day now. ^_^
Indoor Blooms & things that get you through the winter #2
That was amazing! So beautiful. Felt like I was there.
I just love Longwood.Havnt been there in 15 years.
Pretty Orchid Phoebe, Don't feel bad I have not had very good luck lately getting good pics of my house plants. Either too bright or too dark.
Yesterday I received three bags of CC cuttings. They will be a colorful surprise when I get them to bloom. I potted them all up today 9 pots 4 cutting to a pot.
Wish I had enough room for a big one--I always end up giving them away cos they get so big. Gave the last one, which took up half the room(almost-lol) to a coworker on the condition she give me cuttings after it was done blooming, she got fired and I never got them...btw--I put mine outdoors all summer, and don't bring it back in til time for 1st hard frost--they bloom beautifully that way.
Phoebe, the pink in full bloom is lovely!!!!!
Gorgeous orchids!
i've never been to Longwood, that is on my plans for someday.
Beautiful!!!
Kevin, I was visiting your website beautiful home and gardens. WOW what beautiful house plants.
Nice blog!
Love the fountain
The tall, grassy-looking plants on the sill are freesias. I pot these bulbs every October. They bloom in February, perfuming the whole room, if not the whole house!
very good taste in every scene
I miss my Freesias! I used to live near a small greenhouse that grew them every winter, and sold them at a reasonable price--Looked forward to it every January! I was never successful at growing them in the house though--think I didn't have enough supplemental light when I tried it. Nice growing Kevin!
Nice site! Looking to find some of those window shelves.
Jada - I paid $10 each for my glass shelves: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/2009/09/creating-window-garden.html
Thanks!!! The link isnt working for me for some reason....
This will work: go to www.agardenforthehouse.com, click on blog archive for 2009. The window garden article is in the October archives.
Phoebe - If you lived across the street, I'd happily give you a pot of freesia!
Got it! The scented geraniums are becoming my favorites this winter.
Which scented g's do you have? And do you use them for cooking, bathing, etc.?
Or both at the same time?
WG
Its funny, last year I wintersowed some seeds and got the tags mixed up and grew what I believe is a Bill Wallis in a container on the patio. Well, it bloomed all summer and smelled so good I decided to get more this year. I ordered two more of them (pyrenaicun) and am looking for other cultivars. Once I get shelving I may try the ones that are not hardy here, for indoors. They just smell heavenly!
Cooking and bathing?? Tell me more....
There was a time when I grew a dozen of the scented-leaveds. Now I have just two: Pelargonium 'True Rose' (pictured below) and P. 'Lemon Crispin.' In the kitchen, these two are useful for cocktails...a rose- or lemon-scented daiquiri, or a rose-scented iced-vodka. I've also made a rosey martini. You just boil the leaves in a sugar-syrup, and then add it to the other ingredients. Recipes are on the blog.
About bathing: A few leaves of 'True Rose ' tossed into the nighttime bath will almost always induce sleep. Well, they do the trick for me.

I almost always have a pot of lavender on the window sill--and scented geraniums if I can keep them going all winter--but not this year. Just didn't get out enoughto find them. My olfactory memory is enjoying that pot of freesia right now Kevin! Thanks for reminding me--I had forgotten ^_^
Wow Kevin..you said you had a dozen? Where do I find these cultivars? I'd definitely like to have more. Yours look strong and healthy.
Dozing off smelling like a rosebud sounds good too :-)
Wow! That'll make a lot of Mrs. Dash...
yes it is not to look at - we use it all the time
Add some alcohol and then the bath becomes fun!
I just hope the pineapple geranium makes it until spring... I love watering the scented things inside.. makes me think of happy summer thoughts.. the geraniums, pineapple sage and the agastache makes me happy when I smell them
Allison...That punch sounds good! Yep, I noticed the smell is more pronounced when i water...ummmm.
there was a cake they made at well sweep .. I will have to dig the book out for you.. but it was really good!
the rhubarb punch was really good too
Onewish - Thanks for the punch recipe!
One great aspect of the scented geraniums is that they grow equally well indoors and out. They tolerate the heat and dry air of a city apartment, too.
Jada - I bought nutmeg, pineapple, almond, and other scented geraniums from Logees many years ago. Sadly, they do not carry such a big selection now. If anyone knows a grower with a wide collection of scented g's, please let me know!
I forgot to mention another scented pelargonium I have: 'Apple.' This one grows from a crown, and, unlike the other scenteds, it blooms and blooms all winter. The white flowers are tiny, but when the sun strikes them, they release their apple-cider fragrance freely.
