Omelet and the Hat (i.e. Hattus Horribillis)

BUT DOES IT SOUND LIKE A GOOD BARN???? HELP!!!!! I am an urbanly people. I wouldn't know a good barn if it fell on me :O No point in looking if it doesn't sound like a good barn methinks. Although I'm really liking the 3.5 acres thing.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

a good barn.. hmm.. for me.. BIG, barnish looking.. Wooden.. NO metal barns. Good oldfashioned looking barn. Stalls, hay loft in part so you can hang a big rope to swing off of... lots of space for chickens, sheep, cats, dogs, any other critter I'd want to have.. My brothers 100x100 ft barn is nice.. but its metal.. but it sure does hold a lot of critters & hay bales. I just prefer nice old wooden barns. o.. & big enough i can find a nice soft corner full of clean hay bales to take a nap in.. and water close by.. & big barn doors, windows that can be opened in summer to let fresh breezes in... want to make sure its sturdy.. not going to fall in on you. nice leak proof roof.. no spiders.. def no spiders. mice are ok tho.

but that's just me.. not that i'll ever get my barn. but i sure can hope!

Large, Dahls, but possibly very good. It should not be pizin' over. Or so rotted as to need immediate lotsamoolah. But if it has water and electric and horsey-esque fencing, then it should be capable of being any number of fabby things. Workshop, playshop, gardenshop, crittershop. By means of judicious partitioning and Dahlinating...

3.5 acres you could have 1-2 largish creatures, several smallish under-footers, and gardens. Provided the people housing apparatus is such that walls, roof, and floor will consent to stay in their respective locations on a long term basis, ;)

Tis just one teensyweensy reason why I luv you everso grow. Thanks muchly.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Where is it Dahlianut? Im like you, I care to see the animal house first before the peoples house... I am so happy for you.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

So not fair....now ZZ is going to Joplin and Dahlia is looking at barns.

I am bereft...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Tis not fair. Methinks Doctor Doolotz just passed the bar and I totally suck at high jump :(

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

My dear Moxon, to quote your use of the word Bereft.... I am bereft of your life on your farm... Indeed I feel so...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I don't even take the bar until July 2011.

MissJ - I am bereft of your weather...

Clarkson, KY

Think I'm merely bereft of my wits....lolol.

LOL

Right now we are in Socorro NM. Today we meander around here and Truth or Consquences then off to Los Cruces. The barn is in Deming NM. I would like to go there RIGHT NOW but alas DH is right that we must meander there and about and look at other places too. DH is more excited about golf than barns sigh.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

That is great news Dahlianut.... Just to let you know I rationed out the chocolate that you gave Billy, and popped one in my mouth yesterday when I gave him his peice. It was a lovely coffee flavor, I am so inlove with the candy I am going on line later to place an order... Yummy.... Billy really loves it too...

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

DahliaDear, the property sounds beautific! Howsomeever if thy helpmate is more attuned to golf, can this marriage be saved?

I would look at the peoplehouse first, personally, because kitchens and storage and heating are important to me, and barns, if basically sound, can be expanded or contracted or turned upside down or whatever. What, pray tell, wast planning to put in said barn, anyway? Outbuildings are definitely a GOOD thing!

This is exciting! Keep us posted!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

G-G although I would swoon to have a horse methinks that I could not have one of my own not living here all the time. But maybe if I learn on a nearby farm about horse and cow ways (are there sheeps and goats here I wonder?) I might be able foster a large animal or two if there was a need and if there is enough land for them (which Cousin Grows says there just may be for one or two). I think for sure I could have chickens and ducks QUACK! who would like the barnyard (which I might have to build). Chickens and ducks could be trucked in the trusty Ford 150 and given to neighbours or DG friends aboutst here when we are not here, but only if they want more chickens and ducks of course cuz it would be rude to just show up and give someone chickens and ducks. I'm thinking the tack room might be a luvly spot to turn into a writing nook although it would be most bestest if there was still tack in it and a horse snuffling in the barn.

Clarkson, KY

Dahls -In NM it will take more acre per critter, so be greedy in sizing up your available land. I think (and MsJ or Jay may know better) the general rule of thumb is 1 acre per cow in heavenly stuff, 1.5 in good, 2 in not so hot grassland, and 3 in desserty type stuff. Most critters eat slightly different things so the same land can hold a cow and a goat usually. But it does affect your calculations...

Lodi, United States

Running past quickly....out of time...many birthdays....drives....Holidays....

Just to say, in very dry desert environments, you can legally have more horses per acre than in the more verdant areas, since no one expects the horses to survive on pasture and supplemental feeding is assumed.

Happy Birthdays! Happy Chanukah (just past)! Delirious Winter Solstice!

Merry Christmas!

Heavens to Betsy, Murgatroyd, and Other Estimable Dames. The solstice approaches. Light. Light and SUN yes Light!!! The dark days of winter GET to me...

Lodi, United States

I strongly suspect that it is not coincidental that everyone in my family is born on the darkest two days of the year......

Birthdays in December should be repealed.

I second. Sean's is the 22nd, Lashley's the 28th. Kyttyn's...24th? Definitely -I second.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

yes.. mine is the 24th...

I will be the dreaded awful horrid 29. 28 was a bad year... Do i even begin to hope that 29 will be better?

When i was a child, I thought like a child & loved my birthday. I had family galore, my parents friends all around, to whom i was like a grandchild too & presents enough to reach the ceiling! I thought everyone required a Christmas tree for their birthday (my brothers is in Jan & we left it up for his too)

Then i grew a bit older.. & realized no one will come to a party that is not considered family. Wasn't so bad, I started getting lots of cash instead of brightly colored boxes & such. I still sorta adored my birthday time.

Then i grew up & it sucks.

Our of my graduating class of 48 students....

15 of us were born btwn the 10 of Dec & the 31st.

Groundhog must've seen his shadow the preceding winter, lol...

Richmond, TX

Good point!

just sitting here and cracking up
dalianut congrats on the find of the barn. Always check how old the electric is in your barn and home. Yes i know the people house is so boring :( barns are so much more fun . I would make sure there is sufficent vetillation and maybe a coopla on the roof ? .
just my opinion.
i sure hope it works out . Hmmm men and gold ...... yeah i got one of them men too. Build him a putting green next to the barn LOLLLL
i m excited for you !!!!
that is way to funny on the dd who didn't like the food at friends house. LOL i wish my kids were more like that . but they are learning.
I feel for the dad being a single dad is hard.
who is going to Joplin ?

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Dahlianut, Billy and I confered and we agree it would not be rude of you to show up here in the spring on your way back up north with chickens and ducks....

Billy was born in January 14th, hummm with so many born in late dec or early Jan, makes you wonder what really happens in the spring??

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

My dad jumped a fence. (DM some timed said that if she know them what she know years later she would have thrown him back. But they where married 59 years when he pasted away)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks everso MissJestr and Billy ^_^ I have been observing the sparsity of horses and cows in the desertish land Cousin Grow. The large farms and ranches with flocks of horses and cows are in the Rio Grande river valley where it is green. I will certainly have to consult with local ranchers where we live about flocks and pasture and water. Water is very important here. I think it is specially important to remember birthdays during the holidays.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

ooooo the Las Cruces area definitely has potential. Lots of smallish acreages with flock potential with peoplehouses or the ability to plunk a peoplehouse on them. 2 golf courses for DH. While meandering around I also discovered that there are pethud orchards :O Who KNEW? My favorite was 37 acres with approx. 2000 mature pethud trees, foreman's residence, 10 stall stable and paddock, workshop. Comes with people house. I'm wondering if they might need someone to muck out the paddock so I could learn horse ways and pethud ways??? Also BONUS I could take NMSU classes on horse and cow ways. Check this out http://aces.nmsu.edu/academics/anrs/ I would like to learn on a farm mostly though.

Clarkson, KY

sounds fantasmatastical, Dahls...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oooh, I could be the foreman, or forewoman, and just spin when I'm not needed for foreing.

Lodi, United States

But, but, but....I was suppose to be your foreperson, Moxon....

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Well, you can be my foreperson, and I'll be Dahlia's foreperson, so that makes you her foreforeperson. Right?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I will definitely need at LEAST a foreperson and a foreforeperson as they would be fore and I would be very aft having to learn how to muck and groom and pluck pethuds. I wonder if pethud orchards have sheeps? I noted that NMSU has lessons on shearing and wool which could be practically applied under the direction of the fore and foreforepersons. I noted that the peoplehouse had a pool. I wonder if one will be allowed to dip in the pool after a long day of mucking, plucking and shearing? But then maybe the pool is for ducks QUACK! although it looks chlorified.

Clarkson, KY

I think four forepersons for four footed fourpersons is the only balanced way to do it...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oooh, Dahlianut, maybe Catsy and I could be your Co-Forepersons. I think that would be quite superiffic. Catsy could be Co-Fore-Poultry-Person and I could be Co-Fore-Ovine-Person.

But, I interrupt this delightful imagining to bring you news of a strange delivery. It was a dark and snowy night. The doorbell rang, and little footsteps pitter-pattered away as I approached the door. Where was the delivery person? Where was the truck or van? I opened the door, and laying there in the snowfulness, was a small packet. I peered into the darkness, ears straining to hear sounds, but all I could hear was the wind, and the squeak of...of....well I don't know what the squeak was. It was distant.

Anyway, I brought the package in, and noted that it had come from Australia, strangely, by way of Lodi, California. Imagine, what a journey! So I proceeded to begin to open it, and then I was distracted by a repeating of the outdoor squeak. I ventured to the door again, but nothing. Hmmmm....back to the package I went. It seemed as if the package was, well, more open than I had thought I had made it, but no matter. I reached in and pulled out this! A lovely little LuLu purse!! In red, even!! Imagine my delight! But then, I turned it over to find a very mysterious message....

Oh dear me yes, Grownut must be the Co-Fore-Caprine-Person. Of course!
