Hey Carol, I believe your word originated as a shipping term for manure.

Manure used to be shipped as an agricultural product. Being stored in the hull of a ship it had the tendency to get wet, start rotting, and release potentially explosive gas, which collected in the hull. To avoid the problem, manure was shipped with the term "stack high in transit" written on it's containers.
