the photo was too large..."found a lady in AL selling plant"

Ashland City, TN

My hubby and I went to visit my son, daughter in law, and grand daughter in Dothan Alabama this past weekend. We went to a flea market and found a lady who was selling her plants for 3.00 each! I got a large umbrella tree, a bromeliad, some kind of small palm tree (the kind that has the large ball at the bottom, stays close to the ground but grows kinda large. I added these to the plants that I have around my round bathtub that has a sky light over it - where I keep all my indoor plants. Now I just have to get more pots to put them in and because I bought a potter's wheel while in AL I will be able to make my own unique pots to put them in (after I heal from my neck fusion in about 2 more weeks). I wish I had bought more of her plants now...lol

Nice plant's at great price's. The palm that you spoke of sound's like a
Cycas (Sago palm)

Thanks, I'll look that up to fiind out how to care for it.

How fortunate you were! Pretty plants! I know how you feel wishing you had bought more. It seems I can never have enough plants. Hope you heal soon from the neck surgery and that it helps.

Lucky duckie! Have you thrown pots before? Better watch out... ceramics can be just as addicting as horticulture, and a million times dirtier! As if my handle didn't give it away... the only reason I got into plants was because I started making the pots!

Ashland City, TN

hey trinawitch...lost you somewhere! Did you see any plants you DON'T have???...lol

HA...Plants4myPots...I guess you picked the right name. I haven't thrown anything seriously - wasn't convenient getting to the pottery wheel. Now that I have my own I do have great plans!

thanks joy...so far so good with the healing AND my daughter in law (Joy) can always run over to the flea market and pick me up some more - so I am truly fortunate. I came up with that idea last night:)

a few scardie...LOL haven't been on in a while, family issues...headed home soon though, will be on later tonight

Plants4myPot's, if your pot's are the reason you got into plant's then post us some picture's of your ceramic pot's and plant's;-)

Scarediecat, wishing you a speedy recovery.

Scarediecat,

How lucky for you to have run across such a deal. I wish I had been in Dothan that day. :)
The plants are very nice.. I think the palm you mention with a large ball at the bottom may be a Ponytail Palm.

Rachel, if you check my pretty short "have" list... there's pictures of some of the pots I've made in there!

This is a recent pic of two of my favorites at the moment...

That looks so nice. What a good selection of colors and textures, plants included :).

those are definately some nice pots and not your average plain janes...very nice

Rose, your pot's are beautiful but how do you drill the hole's in the ceramic pot's for drainage?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks, ladies! Trina, that sprig of Swedish Ivy you sent me is starting to take off really well! I think it's happy in the new pot. :)

Rachel, when I'm building them out of clay, I cut out the holes with a metal tube when the clay is in a stage called "leatherhard". Basically, after I've throw or built the pot out of the soft clay, I wait until it's half dry - when the clay isn't soft anymore, and has a "consistency" more like hard cheese - that's when I cut out the holes. No hard drilling necessary!

good cause I can't them to grow, they don't like me at all! tgen again I don't have luck with most ivies

I love Plectranthus ("Swedish Ivy" which is not actually ivy): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1354/ and can grow it fine but I can't grow the real thing, Hedera (Ivy): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1637/ for the life of me ... they live for a few months and then all of a sudden die.

Thank's Rose. Being that I know absolutely nothing about making Ceramic pot's, it does make sense. I tried using the "diamond head" cutting shank's for a Dremel to drill hole's in ceramic pot's but found it was not worth the money to do so.

Lynn, don't feel bad about not being able to grow some Hedera's in your part of the world. Some hedera's can take over here in a few year's. If there are any hedera's you would like to have, just let me know.....my mother had several different one's growing at the homeplace and some of them are quite unique looking and I do have some myself.

exactly....I can do everything right and then all of a sudden poof it's dead....now my variegated vinca, which yes I know it's supposed to be an outside plant, does awesome in the pot around the bottom of my oleander

Oh, plant survival, moving, and weather! I'm moving back to the Space Coast of Florida in a couple weeks... and I hope my thumb stays as green as it's been here in Rhode Island. Truth be told, I'm a little scared my Draceanas are gonna start going insane... I like them small!!! But fortunately, my Sun Roses might finally have the right conditions to bloom...

Rachel, sometimes I've found that if I have a larger size ceramic pot that I want to use as a flowerpot, but it doesn't have drainage holes... I usually put a few inches of small, broken ceramic bits at the bottom of the pot, mix a lot of moss or coconut coir with the potting mix, and be very careful when watering. It works best when the pot is pretty big... like more than 10" tall - and especially well if you put a pretty hardy plant in it. I've been growing a nice rosemary topiary in a tall pot with no drainage at all...

Thank you Rose for the information and congratulation's on moving back to Florida. It's got to beat R.I. weather hand's down;-)

Wishing you the best.

Rachel

Plants4myPots: Welcome Home (almost) to Florida! I don't know how long you've been away from Florida, but get ready for temperature shock ... I'm in Daytona Beach, @45 miles north of the Space Coast and we had a high of 83 here today. It's usually a four or five degrees warmer in Brevard County! It was very humid today too and we are expected to have mid 80's until the weekend when another cold front will drop daytime temp's to the low 70's.

No fair I want to move to florida! I got rain rain and more rain...and it's supposed to turn to ice and then snow...oh joy...I'm praying it just stays rain

Ashland City, TN

I want to move to FL also but hubby loves TN because of the hills and colorful leaves. I love it too but I hate cold weather! It seems we have about 5 or 6 months of cold weather and the rest is HOT. I don't mind hot as long as I have water to go with it - pool, ocean...

Maybe one day we'll have a travel trailer and can spend a couple of months there during the winter.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

sounds good to me...can I tag along? I'm small enough to fit in a suitcase...LOL

My DH and I love the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee ... last time we were there (two years ago) I bought a T-Shirt that's way too large for me (size XL) (they didn't have a Med or Lg). It's a big extra large but I couldn't resist because of the saying on the front of it. I wear it around the house and as a nightshirt. The caption on the front of the shirt says: "The Mountains are calling ... and I must go."

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Too true, Scarediecat! I wanna be a "snowbird" when I get around to growing up, and spend November thru May in Florida, and head somewhere where the weather is nice from June thru October. Not sure exactly where yet... maybe that's when I'll motorhome to craft fairs around the country selling the ceramics I made while in Florida! :D

I can't wait to get back into the warm, LadyLin! Birkenstocks, a skirt and a Tee are so much more fun and faster to slip on than sweaters, scarves, long johns, leg warmers, socks, boots and etc when going out. Kinda odd that as an born-n-raised New Yorker - I would somehow learn to prefer putting up with scorching heat than freezing cold.
